I couldn't freaking tell because she kept on changing her accent!!
And she spoke too quickly and mumbled her lines (and since she got like all the funny lines, the audience cracking up right after didn't help either!!)

She didn't keep changing her accent, that is her accent. And it's Scottish, there's no such thing as a British accent, I think the other one you were looking for is English. Scotland is part of Britain.

whatever the accent is supposed to be, she's a VERY well known actress and I've never heard her sound like she does on this show.
Its a scottish accent and i think you'll find that is her accent (she's not putting it on) and thats how she talks in every show she's been in.

I kinda agree with the first poster, i taped the episode and had to back it up and put the captions on to decipher a couple of her jokes, I thought she was a little hard to understand.But that's just me. All in all i like her character, the older, wiser, quick witted one with comments about sex and relationships.
shareDefinitely Scottish. My brother went to a music camp there years ago, he couldn't understand anyone! It was a long week for him. My great grandmother was Scottish. She had lived here in the U.S. probably 50 years and still had the thickest accent ever when she passed away at 90.

shareAshley Jensen does sound a little different then she did on Ugly Betty. But I actually think that she sounds more like herself on this show then on Ugly Betty. Although I have only seen her in Eastenders and more recently The Extras. Perhaps the directors tell her not to sound too Scottish so North Americans can understand her better? Just a thought...my mom is from Scotland and has an accent, obviously I understand her and my relatives but when they are really mad or they get together with a relatives visiting from Scotland I have difficulty with some words they are saying...their brogue becomes quite different!

In the second episode, Jenna's character actually said something about her being Scottish.
In the pilot, I thought it was changing too. I though it was English, then Australian, then, I wasn't sure. I was going to post about her having a horrible accent that should be dropped because it just takes away from the show, then I saw that it is actually, most likely, the way the actress normally talks.
It's still hard for me to listen to though.

This Southern boy was so convincing in his role that many fans wrote to the show and suggested that he teach Charles Shaughnessy (a true British native) how to improve his accent
I thought they mentioned something in the first episode about her being from South Africa, which would mean her accent is way off.

Gordon Ramsay may originally be from Scotland but he speaks with an English accent so this could be why you understand him better?
Her accent is aweful. Yes, I read she's Scottish. It doesn't matter. It sounds like she's talking while she has something in her mouth. It's funny how more people are interested in knowing if she's making it up instead of where she's from.
shareAs a Scottish person i can tell you her accent sounds OK to me, there is nothing fake about it. also it does say on her IMDB page that she was born in Scotland!! and that she trained in Edinburgh.
also if you look at one of the early episodes one of the young guys jokes that she sounds like Shrek, so I'm thinking her character if supposed to be from Scotland
As for the idea of there being a British accent, most Americans have the idea that all British people sound like Judy Dench, that's a a bit like hearing someone from Boston, or New York and labeling that an American accent.

shareI don't think it's a case of someone not sounding like they come from the place of their accent, but people assuming what a place's accent is meant to be. I would imagine if you asked an american to pull off an english accent they'd do some really posh voice and words and we don't sound like that (most of us anyway).

Exactly!
Not understanding her accent is understandable as Americans don't get the same exposure to our accents as we do to theirs through television. Assuming you know a Scottish accent better than a real Scottish person however, is not.
Ashley Jensen is Scottish.She was really hot as a teenage actress in the 80's and still looks pretty good at 41!
