A breath of fresh air

I see a lot of people find the movie slow, dull, "euro" (as a derogatory word), and other things of that nature.

I on the other hand go in the completely different direction. The movies I enjoy most are the ones that give you time to reflect, to "feel" the movie. I guess I like 'cinema' better than 'movies'.

The American had a perfect soundtrack. The best soundtrack is the one that you hardly notice. This one was just that. Long beautiful sequences with nothing but the sound of feet on cobble stone. Wind, noises. The occational tune here and there that weaves into the picture. Perfect!

Clooney played Clooney, a bit darker. More introspective. He does it well I think, though others could do it better. Or it may be that I fail to realize and see what he does, the small nuances.

In any case, I much appreciated "The American". I found it perfectly paced, nicely filmed and with great sound to match.

Yes, there were flaws. I'm swedish myself and the magazine he recieves is filled with errors. Some scenes were really questionable. But on a whole, I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys CINEMA. For the action lovers, see "Shooter" again. Also a good movie, but in a different type of way.
It's like comparing Guns'N'Roses to Dire Straits.

@Conny -

I'l generally agree with your response. I think definitely saying the film is "too Euro", "Euro", etc. is the most ignorant of arguments. As if European films are by proxy faulted for having certain qualities American films don't? There are plenty countless European films that are junk, and the same goes for American films.

I dunno..IMO, I think George Clooney would be the best candidate to play George Clooney. Nobody can do clooney better then clooney himself.

Well said, especially the comparison between cinema and movies. Different strokes.

I completely agree. Great natural pace to the film and beautiful to look at. Who cares what 14 year old nerds think of it - everything that isn't a comic book is "boring" in their universe. This film was a great fusion of Hollywood plot, production and star, and independent film-making sensibility.

The American is my #4 film of 2010 and my Top 5 of that year cover the most memorable as i think it's Clooney's character and the atmosphere of the film that really elevate it. but for those who don't get into that aspect of it might find it dull which probably explains why it's got a 6.4/10 rating as not everyone gets into atmosphere etc in a film it seems and given it's a Clooney film it's different for his audiences basically as they probably expect something a bit quicker paced as this film is more of a character study and not a action film like some people probably expected going into it.

also, Clooney is not playing his more usual suave self in this film either which is a nice change of pace for him.

---------------------------------------------

My Top 13 films of 2010...

1.Edge of Darkness (9/10)
2.Kick-Ass (8/10)
3.True Grit
4.The American
5.The Town
(the films above are the most memorable of 2010 for me)

6.The Book of Eli (7.5-8/10)
7.Unthinkable
8.Tron Legacy
-.The Fighter
10.22 Bullets (7-7.5/10)

11.Hereafter
--.London Boulevard
13.Machete (7/10)

2010 is my favorite year of this current 2010's decade. 2012 on the other hand... lacking some films, it's my all around worst year in roughly 20 years.
