Most boring movie - DO NOT WATCH

Its unbelievable how this movie sucks, first of all it is very slow I get that we dont always need dialogue but for that LONG? 30 minutes was just Clooney walking around, drinking wine and working out. It seems like Mr.Clooney was on holidays. And the Priest? wtf was the point of having him if he did nothing to the story? Thank God, there was hot naked chick. At least, it was well-acted

Terrible, just pathetic movie

Perhaps not for everyone JJ, apparently not you.

A movie doesn't need laser blasters or car chases to be a good film. This film is what they call a "character study" where we learn about the protagonist at the speed of life, not the speed of light.

I truly enjoyed it and with a 6.3 rating so did some other folks. Don't get me wrong, I like laser blasters and car chases too, just don't need them always.

Different strokes!

Agreed.

but i think a lot of if you will like The American a lot or not will boil down to how much you get into Clooney's character (i like that he's not playing his more usual suave self in this as it's a nice change of pace for him and i like how the character is a bit paranoid which you can see from his facial expressions etc) and the general atmosphere of the movie which is where it shines.

but the OP complaining about what's the point of the priest. he's got a point, in trying to get Clooney's character back on the right path to life as he knows he's shady and still sinning greatly and is mostly dead inside and is trying to give him some advice to turn his life around.

I truly enjoyed it and with a 6.3 rating so did some other folks.

Yeah, and it's quite underrated if you ask me. the movie is memorable at the end of the day.

in fact, of this current 2010's decade the following would be my most underrated movies (so far)...

1.Edge of Darkness (2010) - 9/10 (my #1 movie of 2010 and this current 2010's decade)
2.The American (2010) - 8/10 (my #4 movie of 2010)
3.Young Adult (2011) - 7.5-8/10 (my #4 movie of 2011)

they all are in the 6.x/10 range for the average and should easily be low 7's at the minimum. those are memorable movies but don't get the credit they deserve around IMDb.

in fact, here is my Top 10 movies of this current 2010's decade (so far)...

1.Edge of Darkness (2010) - 9/10
2.Source Code (2011) - 8-8.5/10
3.Skyfall (2012)

4.Kick-Ass (2010) - 8/10
-.True Grit (2010)
-.The American (2010)
-.The Town (2010)
-.Kill The Irishman (2011)
-.The Descendants (2011)

10.Django Unchained (2012) - 7.5-8/10 (this would probably be my 10th pick although there is roughly another 5 films or so that may interchange with it)

i have seen 300+ movies released in the 2010 to date time frame to.

p.s. i just finished re-watching The American and it still holds strong (on a 8/10, but closer to a 8.5 than a 7.5) as the last time i re-watched it prior to just now (Dec 26th 2013) was on June 1st 2012. i imagine this is at least the 4th time i have seen it now. if anything, the movie gets stronger with re-watches/time.

Don't get me wrong, I like laser blasters and car chases too, just don't need them always.

Agreed. simple action movies can still be solid here and there but this is not that type of movie like you where saying.

personally... i think the main reason this movie is rated as low as it is (i.e. 6.3/10 average rating), is that some people are going into it expecting a different type of movie especially given Clooney is tied to the movie as this movie is a nice change of pace from his more typical roles and the type of style the movie is (slower paced character study) don't seem to have wide appeal. but for me... this movie wipes the floor with a lot of the big name high $$$ blockbuster types of movies.

but on the bright side i do see some people like this movie quite a bit like myself here and there on IMDb when people bring up some of their favorites of this current 2010's decade.

I go along with your comments about the priest.

Also, good of you to talk about this film in the context of so many other films that you've watched.

I particularly like the way you have a rating table. For your info, I have adopted the following:

Great rating system, geoffrey-jackson. 4 & 5 should actually be turned around though, heading and all. This is basically how I rate those I Do care to watch. If you don't mind, I'm bookmarking as a reminder.

There are movies I don't ever want to see, based on my preconceived views bised by reviews, such as Eyes Wide Shut. Those on That list carry a negative (-1) and will never have a rating. They do not exist. as far as I'm concered. I just do not care to see them, regardless of whom the directer is, the cast, or the award given. The ratings of others won't persuade me to watch, Eyes Wide Shut and others. Not being up to my standards are based solely on my morals, my values, and for the lack of a better word, my guilt.

And now that I've finished reading the entirety of the link, I'll say it's an Excellent list. I wish it were spread around. The 'guidelines' most folks use now have as much depth to them in the rating dept. as that of..well, you fill it in..

If more would really refine the standards by which they rate what they watch, then films such as The American would receive an overall higher rating. So I guess it's up to people under the boards to present great comments. Otherwise, geoffrey-jackson, I would've never seen your link..

@geoffrey_Jackson wow thanks for that rating system. Ive always wondered if there was something like that on the Internet as I have trouble rating movies sometimes. Very cool

Well, I'm glad to see others rated this film an 8 or above. I've watched it every year since it came out, and I'm never dulled, or bored, by it. It's one of my go-tos I rewatch each year.
