Movies like this?

I really liked The American. I really like movies with this kind of pacing. The mostly silent main character, the ponderous glances, great music. Etc.

Would anyone like to recommend any movies that are like this? Older movies?

Refer to the Thread: Most boring movie - DO NOT WATCH for other movies highly recommended. I'm on the hunt myself after wasting valueable time, or feeling like I've exhausted my search.

A little hint: if you read through differing threads or read all the threads, even those which don't look interesting, you'll run across bits of good info.

@BulbusBouffant I enjoyed the movie as well.

Similar movies I could think of-

Shooter (2007)
Leon The Professional (1994)
The Mechanic (1972)
John Wick (2014)
In Bruges (1998)
Blast of Silence (1961)
No Country For Old Men (2007)
A History of Violence (2005)
Tokyo Drifter (1966)

If you don't mind European movies - try

'Consequences of Love'(2004)(Italian) - A mysterious man silent and trying to spend time unobtrusively

'The Girl by the Lake' (italian) - about a murder in a small lake town

'The Quiet Man' or Una vita tranquilla (2010) - man with a past hiding somewhere

'Plein Soleil (Purple Noon), and its American remake The Talented Mr. Ripley

'The Aura' (2005) Argentinian -

Lots of 70s movies have a similar stories of lone man, trying to cope in a foreign land with the emphasis on the atmosphere (Day of the Jackal,?malone)

Thank you simonschama. I'm going to watch all of them. I actually have Purple Noon on Criterion I hadn't gotten around to watching yet. The movie I was looking for has been sitting right here the whole time!!

If you think of any other atmospheric 70s movies. European or not! Let me know. Since these boards are going away I don't know who else I would ask lol.

I'd add The Limey (1999), with L.A. serving as the foreign land...

To me it felt like a remake of Le Samourai.

Anyone who liked this film (or is looking for a better one along similar lines) would like:

"The Last Run" with George C. Scott. It's probably a better film, in spite of its lower budget. Tony Musante and Scott's ex-wife Colleen Dewhurst as the understanding hooker. Plus, his future wife, Trish van Devere! Some great quotes in there, too.

Another similar film is "The Hit" with Terence Stamp and a young John Hurt and younger Tim Roth. The opening music is a great guitar solo by Eric Clapton!

For a more offbeat film with a powerful antagonist: "The Night of the Following Day," with Marlon Brando opposite Richard Boone. Also, Brando's then-girlfriend Rita Moreno and a sexy Pamela Franklin. Look for a bit part by Al Lettieri.

I put my favorite scene from it on my YouTube channel. Brando confronts Boone and vice-versa:
