WONDERFUL interview with Dustin Lance Black

Wonderful interview indeed. I personally know Lance and how much he put into this project, and it's a very good, unique film which was unfairly criticized in Toronto. I attended the Wednesday premiere and the audience seemed to enjoy it a lot. BTW, it's Dustin, not Justin Lance Black :)

Thanks for the heads up, I've corrected the title. I must have been tired when I originally posted it.

My overall impression of TIFF this year? A bunch of hyper critical know nothings. What happened to film festivals being a celebration of film and filmmakers and not an auction site?

Did you see this review? This is a writer whose reviews I've begun to enjoy. He seems to be pretty clear sighted. http://gordonandthewhale.com/tiff-2010-review-whats-wrong-with-virgini a/

No problem, and glad you enjoyed the film as much as I did :) I read Gordon's review and it's the most sensible I've read so far. Here's mine:

"My overall impression of TIFF this year? A bunch of hyper critical know nothings. What happened to film festivals being a celebration of film and filmmakers and not an auction site?" - Couldn't have said it better!
I'm a Brazilian film student living in Vermont, and I've been to major festivals including Sundance, and although we know that places like Cannes, Venice and Berlin (all festivals I'd love to attend someday) are often mostly an 'auction site' as you described behind the whole glamorous, film-loving facade, we, real film buffs, love to attend a film festival above all for THE CELEBRATION OF FILM AND FILMMAKERS! Of course it's a great marketplace where great films can pick up distribution, undoubtedly, but it shouldn't be just about that. I wouldn't want to think a movie like "Virginia" would only find an appropriate audience at indie festivals - the audience clearly enjoyed it, but the critics seemed to really want to bring it down because, you know, Lance is young, beautiful, smart and very successful, just coming out of an Oscar win, so they love being harsh. I say, screw the critics! There are very few 'film critics' left that I seriously respect; I miss the likes of a Pauline Kael.

Speaking of celebration of film and filmmakers... I drove over 12 hours just to see this film (and another 10 hours or so in the rain on the way back), and I had a wonderful time :) I doubt the critics who got PAID to enjoy films like this and report back enjoyed their time as much, though. Too *beep* bad for them.
