I can't for the life of me figure out why this movie was panned so hard by critics. I saw it twice this weekend, and though I found some of the Mormon characters hard to take seriously (but frankly, I find real Mormons hard to take seriously so that problem might not be the film's fault) the film is entertaining which to me, if a film does that it's successful.
And Jennifer Connelly's performance is extraordinary, one of the best of her career. I think critics are used to seeing the same old hollywood formula of how to approach various things such as mental illness, and think that if something doesn't follow in that mold, they are like: nuh uh you did it wrong, and then don't even give the film a chance. This movie had a fresh approach to dealing a schizophrenic main character, and in my opinion worth going to twice in one weekend.
