Well....

I gave this movie a 5 but might up it to 6 if I re-watch it. It was beautifully shot and the cast was first class. Story line wise I am thinking a 3 or 4.

Outside of the Nazi angle I see this movie as the character evolving and growing into an adult. His childlike mannerisms and style of dress/makeup was the outward hint of his inability to grow and mature. He says children have a hard time giving up something once they've started it. He is told by the smoking woman that he has never grown up. He's probably been blowing that hair from his forehead since he was a teen.

A combination of drug use, fame and having the money and wealth to insulate himself from the rest of the world played into it I'm sure. But busting out on his own and having a purpose, coupled with losing his father seemed to be enough to get him to cut his hair and grow up by the end of the movie, finally being able to grow out of his guilt for the two kids dying and realizing it's time to put his past behind him.

My initial rating was a "5", but now it's an "8", borderline "9".

So I would certainly recommend a re-watch.

It's about growing up - - which can be done at any age.

It's also about coming to terms with the past. The Nazi encounter is a key element.
