I liked the music, I liked the movie, some scenes are really good (the final speech by the nazi) but it is true that the director wanted to be too original and the photograph is too dark.

Yeah it was all over the place.....like 2 or 3 scripts all mixed up with no proper structure to it

Very poor i thought

Sean Penn wasn't bad and it had a number of very nice locations which were shot in a sensational way, but the story just didn't seem to be going anywhere.

I completely disagree, Sean Penn played a truly unique character brilliantly and the film's charm is in its disjointedness.

Who wants to see a film that goes from A to B along the most boring path?

Most it seems, drink the difference and life becomes new and fresh. Strange is the cry that travels before great art.

Embrace the difference!

Life's path isn't A to B after all, maybe A to Z via spagetti...... scotch with herring, ice cream and steak....

I dont think it was a bad film or a train wreck but i do agree i didnt like the structure. I liked the chracters and thought Sean Penn was particularly good but i just felt the story arch of finding the fathers nazi humiliator didnt seem to fit.

I think that's simply because the nazi subplot wasn't the point at the end. We were supposed to have the feeling that it was a major point of the movie just like Cheyenne was kind of focused on it, determined to get to the guy, or gradually decided to find him and do something about the whole issue, not really knowing what it is he wants to do... Which is kind of the whole point. It's about the proverbial journey.

I think the film is about his boredom and its roots being - as is usually the case - in places you'd never think of. And once he lets go of his own burdens, he finds his form of catharsis by dismissing the nazi obsession in a most effective way (his revenge is far more effective than the kind of revenge suggested by the gun store guy).

So... This is pretty much a film about money not being everything it's cracked up to be; about boredom, disillusionment, and most of all it's a film about those little things in life, like many other movies, but seen through this ex-rock star character it takes a different and more challenging approach, I guess. It hides many brilliant statements, to be fair. But movies like this, with their slow pace and quirky characters, are seldom understood by mainstream audiences, simply because the average viewer won't take the time to get absorbed by the atmosphere or to relate to the main characters.

When great artists are first noticed, the general public sees them as 'strange'. Thus, the phrase coko used.

bad review - a bit of a dip-stick

it wasnt TERRIBLE, but definitely not the best movie Sean has done at all.
the script and the vision of the movie just didnt translate that well.

I loved everything about it....wished it could have been even longer. I specially loved Sean Penn as Cheyenne.

I agree with you cornella123.. This film was wonderful and I loved everything about it. I've watched it more than once and it gets better every time.

A beautiful piece of work and for me just pure movie perfection.

And I agree with you, katentek. I have seen this film twice, and enjoyed it even more in the second watching. The second watching allows one to take in the spectacular scenery, the lighting details, and the great choices in the music even more closely, since you are already prepared for the character development, which is beautiful and stunning in its own right.

I look forward to seeing a third time. There are some films that are just that intriguing. Great work by Sean Penn; he was exactly right for the part, in every way.
