Jordana was an ugly cow.

And extremely unlikable in every facet of her existence.

Why did Oliver even care about her? There was absolutely NOTHING appealing about her in the least, and she even treated Oliver like crap on top of it.

This is where the movie failed for me. In order to sympathize with Oliver and understand his plight, I, the viewer, needed to be able to understand why he gave a turd about that fat, ugly, wench of a girl in the first place.

I'm not saying I don't appreciate a movie with "real" people instead of only glamorous Hollywood actors, but come on... we couldn't have had a girl with at least a minutia of attractiveness or charm?

You are what makes this world horrible.

reply

For finding an ugly mean girl unappealing and being unable to sympathize with the main character because of it? Ok, horrible as advertised.

She's beautiful. I once dated a girl who looks kinda her. If she's fat then what kind of body figure appeals to you? Anorexic girls?

reply

Not ugly fat ones?

If u want to watch an American chick flick where all the girls are fake and blonde then nobody is stopping you!!!!! This film is different ok?

reply

You're right. I'm such a shallow person that loves fake blonde girls and American chick flicks. That's why I actively seek out foreign films to watch. You've got me all figured out!

The film being "different" isn't the problem. The problem is that Jordana is unappealing in every single way possible, both physically and personality wise, which ruins the connection the viewer has with the main character. This ultimately leads me, the viewer, to just not give a **** what happens to him. You don't want your viewers to not give a ****.

See, appealing is a relative term.
To you it might not feel so appealing, but to many us, it feels.
She has her shades.

Are you sure this isn't one of those things where because the character was such a bi tch, you were suddenly blind to any of her physical qualities? And I'm not trying to criticise or anything, I'm just saying, in real life I'd probably think a girl like Jordana was pretty hot until she opened her mouth or did something horrible. After that she'd just be a cow.

reply

Oh that was most definitely part of it, yes.

I found her completely unattractive from a physical standpoint as well, but it's not like she was the most hideous thing I've ever seen either. Her personality made her completely and totally unbearable though.

This is a coming of age story for her and Oliver. What makes you an expert on teenage relationships man? Your "why does he go for her" question proves that you have totally misinterpreted the movie. In my opinion The both care for each other deeply but struggle to show it to each other. however by the end of the movie they have grown. Both individually and together. They both make mistakes. Oliver does the worst possible thing he could have, when her mother is on the verge of dying. He does absolutely nothing! So why aren't you also posing a question about why she goes for him... Anyway, sorry I'm ranting, just my take on things.

Well, she was probably cast because the film probably wanted average characters.

But attractiveness aside, the believability Oliver found her attractive is still there. Jordana was the first girl that paid Oliver any attention. A lot of people go head-over-heels over their first love, irregardless of their attractiveness.
