The Oscar

This work of Wenders will be Germany's nominee for the 2012 Best Foreign Picture category.

Do you think it stands a chance of winning, or even getting short-listed? I doubt it'd win, as it's hard to see the Academy letting a documentary win. Of course it being 3-D is a novelty.

I hope I'm wrong though. ;)

Haven't seen this yet, but why wouldn't you/they consider giving it a nomination in the Documentary category?

Well, it might get a nomination in the Documentary category. The sad fact of the matter is that the German film industry nowadays mainly churns out silly comedies so until something decent comes along, putting a documentary forward for best foreign film is probably not a bad idea.

I think a nomination in the "Best Documentary" category may be more likely, given there's some tough competition to make the "foreign film" list ("A Separation", "Bullhead", "Breathing ("Atmen")"...). Moreover, Wim Wenders is well-known in the US and he only lost out narrowly in 1999 with "Buena Vista Social Club" (nominated in the "Best Documentary" category).

I hope it does. It's stunning.

This film wasn't nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, but did make it as Best Documentary. It is a better fit for the Documentary category where it can be compared to films it has a chance of beating.

In the Best Documentary Category, this is my pick to win.

Though it didn't win the Oscar, it is still a fantastically well done film. Saw it the the other day and it's a beautiful tribute!
