Little white lies is an idiom. There is no English translation for the French title, which is also an idiom, however both idioms imply hiding something. To tell a little white lie is to rationalise that your lie is not really that bad, certainly not the sort that is sinful. The point being it's a rationale to lie and as the film shows lies in relationship prove to be hurtful. The colour matters in this context.

Why problem make? When you no problem have, you don't want to make ...

So you're saying screw the racist implications?

Yes, you must look beyond any racist implications. It's an idiom that's been in English usage for many years, maybe generations.

reply

Don't you think it's time to put it aside in this era of political correctness?

The literal translation of the title is "Little Handkerchiefs." It comes from the French aristocrats holding a handkerchief over their mouths so they could speak behind it and tell little lies.

Huh? Haven't you ever used this expression? Venial sins versus mortal sins or like lying about taking the trash out versus lying about killing your grandma.

Most of us wouldn't get through the day without using white lies of some sort.

reply

Nuh uh, only liars use lies of any sort
