Long story short, it can't. The USS Missouri was capable of a top sustained speed of 25-30 knots, which is more or less equivalent to mph. But that can look pretty fast when you're talking about something that big, especially when there's no faster ships around to compare it to.
Regardless, I DON'T think it could move fast enough to do a handbrake turn like they did in the movie.

You know, I love sarcasm. But if you have knowledge I don't, I would genuinely like it if you would educate me (not being sarcastic). I've always assumed that that MPH was generally equivalent to knots. How fast is 30 knots, in mph?

A Knot is faster than a MPH.
At a very low number, they are fairly close, but at higher speeds they grow further and further apart.
A Knot is a Nautical Mile/Hr.
MPH is Statute Miles/Hr
Nautical Mile is 6076 ft
Statute Mile is 5280 ft
5 kts = 5.8 mph
20 kts = 23 mph
30 kts = 34.5 pmh
100 kts = 115.1 mph
At 30 kts, the 4.5 mph difference between actual speed and assumed equivalence, does not seem like much. If you are in a car driving down the highway, +/- 4.5 mph does not seem like much at all. But when you are ploting out a course and speed for a ship travelling great distances over days worth of travel... That difference means you do NOT end up where you planned to but are off by many hundreds of miles.

Faster actually.
Missouri's top speed was 33 knots. (about 38 mph)
However, the fuel drain at that speed is tremendous and would severely curtain her max range before refueling was required.

The anchor drop was my all time favorite. It was so beyond the pale of idiocy that I couldn't help but bust a gut. I kept thinking of how they tried the same thing in 'Speed 2', and it didn't work. Its amazing to think that a guy who made a tornado roar like a dinosaur was more nautically learned than a guy making a film centered around naval warfare.
shareWell the speed and manuverability of the Big Mo shown in the movie are very enhanced by Hollywood magic. As for the firepower those 16 inch guns do pack one hell off a punch. A full 9 gun broadside will push the ship 30 to 50 feet lateraly. I had a friend who was in the Navy whose ship was off the coast of Lebanon when both the NJ and later the Wisconsin were shelling the mountaintops where hostile forces were hiding out. He saw recon pictures showing blast craters several hundred feet across from the 16 inch HE shells. One part of the Big Mo's defenses they ignored were the Phalanx cannons for close quarters defense which were installed during the Regan era refits to all the Iowa class Battleships which would have easily eliminated the incoming alien projectiles.
