Did anyone laugh when Susan cried (about her dad) and then Michael also cried in the beginning? I'm not being mean, but I really find it hilarious.

She wasn't really crying because of her dad. The emotional outburst and feeling of grief was a prerequisite that signaled the loss of smell, which is also why Michael begins crying. You obviously didn't pay much attention to the movie or somehow failed to comprehend what was happening.
