schools

at the beginning of movie the teachers go around and criticize children. you can hear "your skirt is too short" comment which is a think teacher sohuld never say. also one guy gets hit over the head for listening to mp3? had it happen in my country the teacher would be kicked out of job immediately.
I feel for those children, the teachers there look like their 2 centuries late in time.

thats how the school system is in south korea. teachers are allowed to hit the kids

Is this your homework Larry?

reply

Why shouldn't a teacher tell a child their skirt is too short? I think it would be inappropriate to let it slide. Now the children should not be hit, but dress codes are certainly appropriate.

dress code in schools is an abomination. it is totaly unnecessary thing that merely tries to make everyone "equal" and ends up ruining everyones day. people shoudl dress the way they want to.

I know this is an old post, but I think this logic is really irrational when it comes to schools. If you want to dress in skirts up to your ass and wear shirts that are centimeters away from revealing your nipples, that's fine on your own time (though I think it looks ridiculous in public as well as in schools, but whatever, your choice), but when it comes to school, dress codes are in place to attempt to keep kids' attention on their work, not their classmates. Yes, a guy is going to check out a girl whether she's in sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt or something more revealing if he finds her attractive in the first place, but at least if a girl's dressed semi-decently, she won't look like she's just come back from clubbing. Not to mention, it makes adults extremely uncomfortable to see 14 year old girls trying to push as much cleavage as possible out of their shirts. I don't know how old you are, but if you've ever seen a kid years younger than you dressing in a really revealing way, you should know how uncomfortable you feel because it just looks wrong.

I know I'm coming across as extremely conservative with this dress code rant, but I'm really not. I fully agree that people should be allowed to dress however they want - on their own time. When you're at school or work, someone else is in charge, be it your principal or your boss, and if they decide that you should wear uniforms or follow a dress code, then you should.

well i dont know where you see those centimeters away from nipples dresses as i have never actualyl seen one in existence. and it really wont matter how you dress the kids both, other kids and adults will feel the same way around them. i dont see why should you feel unconfortable about somones dressing at all. the fact that you feel unconfortable is wrong, nto the way people dress.

and no NOONE shoulf follow a drss code. this may sound extreme but it is true. peopel should wear what they want all the time. do we live in 17th century when you had to dress specially to be noticed? if in 300 years we didnt manadge to get rif of such nonesense, no wonder we have so many narcisists.

Well done StephEff, I think you just about nailed it.

Strazdamonas, I respect your point of view, but some of your points really puzzle me:

"It is totaly unnecessary thing that merely tries to make everyone "equal" and ends up ruining everyones day" How so? Why does it ruin the student's day?

"well i dont know where you see those centimeters away from nipples dresses as i have never actualyl seen one in existence." Yeah believable, I guess depending on your culture and where you live, you may/may not have seen kids wear them. But they do exist, and let me tell you it does make people feel uncomfortable if a kid (e.g. 13 year old) started wearing them.

"i dont see why should you feel unconfortable about somones dressing at all" Everyone is different, if you don't feel this way, then someone else may.

"and no NOONE shoulf follow a drss code. this may sound extreme but it is true. peopel should wear what they want all the time" This point is your most flawed. Would you hire a lawyer dressed smartly in a suit or one in a singlet, shorts, and a pair of sandals?

My two cents, I think school uniforms are a part of growing up. I sure didn't like them, but the more I wore them and the older I got, I realised the benefits. It felt like we were apart of something, all of us friends and whatnot learning together at one institution, we were the ambassadors to our school. Our uniforms became something we represent: our school spirit. Inter-school competitions would never be the same if everyone came in free dress. Plus, I think wearing the uniforms set us up for the workforce: helmet, overalls, t-shirt, jeans - typical of a builder. Suits - businessman or lawyer etc. Uniforms are basically an "identity" and taking them away would be foolhardy, purely my opinion.

how can wearing unconfortable clothes not ruin your day?

"Would you hire a lawyer dressed smartly in a suit or one in a singlet, shorts, and a pair of sandals? "

i dont care as long as he does his job well.

this only proves my point. sure hardhats are needed for safety, the rest is jsut antoher form of "We want you to be identical and not have a mind of your own"

So you're making an association that uniforms = uncomfortable. And so everyone, wait, emphasis on "everyone" (generalising), including yourself loathe it. Seems like you've had a rough times with uniforms!

"Would you hire a lawyer dressed smartly in a suit or one in a singlet, shorts, and a pair of sandals? "

"i dont care as long as he does his job well."

Yeah I guess the judge and the jury would all trust the guy in a t-shirt, shorts and sandals in the court room on the basis that he 'does his job well'. I'm no expert when it comes to law, but I somehow doubt anybody will take what that lawyer says seriously. Oh wait, sorry, I was generalising just then... I mean "most" people. It's okay.

"sure hardhats are needed for safety, the rest is jsut antoher form of "We want you to be identical and not have a mind of your own"

So what you're implying is that those in uniforms don't have a mind of their own? You're not watching Invasion of The Body Snatchers are you...?

Look, I'm not trying to put you down, I can fully see why someone would oppose uniforms. But some of your points make no sense, not logical at all.

reply

well, if they wont take the lawyer seriusly just because of his clothes, then they need thier mental heath checked.
military uniforms were designed for two reasons: one that you know its not your enemy and second one for all soldiers to be "equal" "identical". uniforms basically yties to kill anything unique. same with a lot of education nowadays. stynadartized tests and anyone with different mindset is considered "strange".
and im sorry that some of my points may seem illogical, as you already noticed, my english is far from perfect, so its not always easy to express what i think.

Yes... either the rest of the world has problems or it's just a selected few... agreed.

Imagine that, soldiers in free dress, that would be perfect since that would mean no war. If only it worked in reality eh?

================================================================================

Camouflage field uniforms are designed for more than that - not only know who's your comrade but also to blend youself with the terrain so the enemy has a harder time aiming his gun at you. A soldier wearing plain clothes might as well be mistaken as a peasant militiamen or terrorist - plus it reduces his chances of survival dramatically out in the field. These field uniforms are mainly designed for survival and missions, not for every day casual comfort.

It's also not uncommon for soldiers to be using different accessories with their uniform (when on missions, some may be fielding goggles while others have NVGs etc.). Special ops personnel are also authorized to wear civilian clothing when in disguise and even grow their hair and beards.

Ceremonial uniforms are for the purpose to represent the country's military and government. If they didn't have such uniforms, they'd look pretty stupid by most people's standards.

Let the world change the punishment for sexual-related crimes to execution

reply

well we werent talking carmouflage uniforms here really. i udnerstand that blending in the enviroment for soldier is needed.

Straz, I don't really agree with your post. And I get the feeling that you are an extreme liberal that probably homeschools your kids because you're afraid of the institutionalization of public schools. Or if you are not a parent, you probably just hate wearing the strict dress code for your public school. My advice to you is, Deal with it!
Steph, I completely agree with your argument. As some other people said, there is a reason why people in the professional world dress the way they do. Because people JUDGE other people based on what they look like. It is a fact, and it is how human beings are. No, I certainly would not hire a lawyer who was dressed like a hooker. And if I am a teacher, I want to look respectable and not like I just got back from clubbing. Yes, when you're in college, you can dress however you wish and you can go to class in your pajamas if you want (it is quite comfortable).

tldr, There is an unspoken dress code in the professional world. And that is not going to change anytime soon. Ask yourself, would you respect the president (of any county, whoever that may be) if they spoke in public naked? Or what about an S&M leather/latex getup? I'm sure they'd get plenty of votes with that!

I do not go to school. My school had no uniforms and i have no children yet. Yes, i agree that my views are liberalistic in some sense. Nothing wrong in that. Anyone suggesting people to deal with idiocity however shouldn't open his mouth in the first place.

Because people JUDGE other people based on what they look like.

Sadly we have yet to outgrow the psichological imprint that middleages has left of clothes making the man. yes, we judge people based on what they look. no, we shouldn't do that. if we do that, that is our shortcoming.

IMO equal is good, children with money look the same as the ones that dont have as much. And its also easier to identify from kids of another school.
