My thoughts on the mini

Here's my initial thoughts on the mini (originally posted at www.chroniclechamber.com, the world's best Phantom site, where I will later post a full review. Watch this space).

MILD SPOILERS:
It's a good series, with a really good opening scene that gave me goosebumps. It would have benefitted enormously from having some errors/changes fixed, but overally, it was much better than expected. The final scene is really exciting, and is alone reason enough why this deserves to become a regular series. A mouthwatering moment that could lead to very cool new stories.

Ryan Carnes (and most of the other actors) did a good job (his Phantom voice, slightly deeper than his regular voice, is terrific), and the new costume, while still not great, works much better when seen on the screen rather than in still photos (however, it actually looked more purple in some photos, here it looks almost completely black with some purple "shine" from time to time). What we all thought was a "hoodie" is actually a high-tech helmet Kit can take on and off! Cameron Goodman is lovely as Rennie, Kit's girlfriend, and the romance between them is really well done.

The action is pretty good, and the fight scenes are well done. Even the "cartoon origin" sequence worked pretty well, despite a glaring, annoying error that it's unbelievable nobody making the thing noticed (slight spoiler: the 1st Phantom swears the oath over the body of his dead father, not his father's murderer). They got a tiny detail like the year the Jungle Patrol was founded right, but they could not do the defining moment of the entire Phantom series correctly? Unbelievable.

Also, the name "Lee Falk" is not mentioned anywhere in the credits, which is downright offensive. And I dislike the filmmakers making fun of the original outfit (there's even a moment where a character claims the 21st Phantom "loathed" his costume because it was so theatrical, which I found very unecessary and annoying). The way they explain the 21st Phantom's, um, absence is certainly interesting.

The first part of the mini certainly has a "Phantom-feel", but some of it is lost in the second chapter when things become really, uh, tech-y. However, we are fortunately not in Phantom 2040/Defenders of the Earth-territory, and the MacGuffin is actually pretty cool (though hardly realistic).

While much of this post focuses a bit on negative stuff, I overally liked the thing despite some issues and hope it gets picked up, as it is has huge potential (hopefully with a tweaked costume closer to the original) as a regular series. Keep in mind this is a VERY modern take on the character, with clear sci-fi (um, syfy) elements, and if you're a purist who loses sleep when an artist draws the skull ring on the wrong finger, you should find something else to do with your time rather than watching this because you are going to be dissapointed. However, I (mostly) liked it, so shoot me.

It's essentially The Phantom meets 24 meets Smallville (though much better than Smallville ever was). There are changes, but some of them doesn't contradict established Phantom lore, they build upon it.

But the wait for a truly great Phantom adaptation continues.

A friend got me a copy recorded from Canadian TV. And before anybody asks, I won't put it online, because

a) I don't know how to do it

b) I am against illegal downloading

and c) because the show deserves to be seen by enough people to warrant a regular series, and putting it online could dramatically reduce the number of viewers when it airs on SyFy.

Didn't know it's aired in Italy.

You're welcome, mate. It's good to hear it'll air in June (I thought it'd happen much later than that), however, do Americans watch TV that time of year (here in Scandinavia few people do during summer...)? I hope it'll have a chance at success.

Also hope it'll air in the UK. The character needs the exposure for sure.

Thanks so much for posting this. First "full sized" review i've read on this, sounds good.

-Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't care.

You're welcome sir, however, I hope people reading this won't get unrealistic expectations for the mini just because this one fan liked it. Like I say it's certainly not perfect, but it's good, IMO.

reply

Yeah, i'm definitely not gonna go into this expecting a masterpiece

-Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't care.

One thing i would have liked for the reviewer to mention is Guran, the cast list has a woman playing him. Would have loved to have heard the story behind that...

-I'm in a meeting, Spike.
-Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't care.

reply

I assume she is supposed to be a descendant (daughter?) of the real Guran, though that's just a theory. Maybe the filmmakers thought all the tribe-leaders were named Guran?!

Bengalla has moved yet again in this film (bizarelly to Indonesia), which is one of the more annoying changes. The Bandar tribe is not mentioned by name, sadly, and there is no word about the old Guran as far as I remember.

Anyway, Sandrine Holt was very likeable in the part, she did a really good job.

reply

Okay. Hmm.

What about the bald guy in the trailer? "I represent an agency known as The Phantom". Is The Phantom a government official or has the Jungle Patrol evolved into some CIA-like agency?

Sorry for the questions but i'm very excited about this series and i most likely won't get to see it for many more months.

I'll happily answer any question you have, though I don't want to head into spoiler-territory.

The man is called Abel Vandermaark, and is an intriguing character. His family has been connected to the Walker family for several generations, and he is essentially responsible for finding the "lost son", Kit Jr. He works for Bphaa Thap (pronounced Bha Thap, simply), which is what the Jungle Patrol has evolved into, an international agency. It all works much better than I ever expected it to.

There's a really cool moment when he first meets Kit where he pronounces the name "Kit Walker" the "Bengallan" way.

It certainly doesn't look or feel low budget, it's obvious they put some money into this. Sets generally look pretty good; the interior of the Skull Cave is really cool (though the exterior is not quite as good as in the Zane film).

The action is for the most part solid (though obviously not on the level of many big budget films), with an excellent little fight scene between the Phantom and an assassin particularly standing out. Brutal, gritty and tough, with a menacing Ghost Who Walks.

So visually, The Phantom didn't dissapoint me at all, though you should not expect special effects on the level of SyFy's Battlestar Galactica. And despite hating the new costume when I saw it on photos, I grew to mostly like it when seeing it on screen (there are some shots of Carnes wearing it in the mini where it looks amazingly cool and very "Phantom-y" on him).

Have you already written it? If so, could you PM?

reply

No, still working on it, but I will post a link here when it's posted online, should not be too long from now.

I realize it seems foolish to argue about a costume, but this is actually a very significant point. (At least in something so drastic of a change.)

The Phantom is known as 'The Ghost Who Walks.' (among other names) It is said by his enemies that he can't be killed, and it appears so as he keeps coming back after they try. (or succeed)

Now, imagine someone has killed the Phantom and some kid shows up wearing a hi-tech suit of armor and claiming to be the Phantom. Kind of kills the illusion, doesn't it? And why does the Ghost Who Walks need all that gadgetry?

I agree 100% about the comments regarding the old costume. Billy Zane built his body for a year and a half in order to fill that costume. He wanted it to look natural, not some sculpted outfit like Batman. Hopefully, we'll get a sequel to that film.

reply

No offense but Billy Zane looked ridicoulus in his suit and the movie was terrible, it made a mockery out of the Phantom comics.

-I'm in a meeting, Spike.
-Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't care.

reply

Well said. One of the mistakes of the SyFy mini is that the new costume removes a large part of the defining mystery of the character, which is a shame.

However, it kind of makes sense that this Phantom needs a high tech costume, since he is just a regular guy who never received training from his father, like all previous Phantoms did (there's an awesome little scene in the mini where this is talked about). It works, but I prefer the elegant, classic costume of the comic. I'm a massive fan of Billy Zane's performance as the Phantom, and I thought he looked great in his costume (though the purple should have been a bit darker like it is in most comics).

reply

It wasn't the spandex that bothered me (or that it wasn't blue), it was the decorations on it that made me dislike it. And Billy Zane did make for a good Phantom, the cheesyness of the story and supporting cast just... bleh.

-I'm in a meeting, Spike.
-Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't care.

reply

I kind of liked the decorations. But like I said the outfit would have benefitted from a darker shade of purple, more like the one currently seen in the Moonstone comics.

I find the film good fun, but it's frustrating in that, yes, the story is so mediocre and the tone is all over the place. I liked most of the supporting cast though.

reply

but isabella rosellini was terrible. so not isabella, i must say. such a good actress given awful lines and having to wear the ugliest costumes.

i found the mini...entertaining, but far from great. the singh leader was also horrible. however, "vandy" and guran fit well in this modern version of the comic.

reply

Yeah, agreed about Rossellini, she was bad. I liked the Rhatib Singh, though.
