Remarkable Mini-series

I was expecting the usual crap that SYFY turns out but I am delightfully surprised how wel it is put together. The first hour was spectacular. The drawings helped bring to life his legacy. IF this becomes a series, they should include more drawings and narration from the previous Phantoms. Remember in the series Kung-Fu where they showed scenes from his past? The same could be done with the new Phantom. It would make the necessary transition from the previous Phantoms and use their strengths to help the 22nd Phantom.

Here's hoping they continue to draw on the past to decide the future for the Phantom!

I really enjoy the 2-Part Mini-Series. I Hope Season 1 get picked up soon.

This miniseries was alright but it needs a lot of retooling. When Chris was told of his ancestors, the story was wrong. They also need to go back to the original costume. I liked the description of this one with the Kevlar and other materials woven into it which made it resistant to heat and small arms. They could just make the suit a darker purple so it doesn't look so dorky.

reply

The origin story of the ancestors was quite a bit more faithful than one would expect. I do agree that they need to tweak the suit, though. I didn't mind the majority of it but the bomb-disposal body armor collar needs to go. They also need to find a better balance with the helmet/mask aspect. Yes, you can't make out his identity but you also can't find any personality to it either.

I, too, was surprised that this was actually better than the usual SYFY crap. The acting wasn't too bad, the writing was OK, the directing/editing good as well. As a long time reader of the newspaper comic, I was hoping they wouldn't feel the need to "update" the character, but what they did held my interest. This was far better than what they did to Riverworld, Mothman, etc.

syfy airs this, but chose not to purchase lots? fail. epic fail.

It was a "back-door pilot" which means they made a movie to see if people would be receptive to the idea. If it did well in ratings they would go ahead with a series. They did the same thing with Painkiller Jane.

reply

this pilot deserves to get it in the backdoor. not as bad as most syfy shows, but bad nonetheless

reply

I agree this movie wasn't that good, but neither was the movie made before the Painkiller Jane series. The movie was far different from the comics but they changed what was wrong and the TV series did better, although it only lasted for one season because most people were not familiar with the comics to begin with.

reply

Painkiller Jane doesn't really count since the series was NOTHING like the tv-movie.

I found this movie to be a rough jewel in the Syfy Channel's chest of film garbage. The plot was decent, the suit was good, and I am glad they choose to leave the original one behind. The general public had been making fun of the Phantom's original costume for years since the Billy Zane flick, which I think they hinted at in the film. Though, I credit Ryan Carnes' acting for elevating this film to above average. He was a much stronger lead than I ever suspected a Syfy movie could produce. However, I will say that the love story was completely mishandled and far too rushed, despite the good chemistry of the two actors.

reply

I enjoyed this film a lot too. I am so hoping they decide to make a full series out of this. I mean, they have done so little quality programming outside of EUREKA and WAREHOUSE 13 originally produced for the network and it is WAY better a choice for a "syfy" channel than ECW or WWE NXT. I still have no clue how that got on a sci-fi channel, let alone still on after all these years.

That's exactly my point. It was a "back-door pilot" to see if the concept would be welcomed by fans. Once the show happened, what didn't work in the movie was taken out or changed. They will probably do the same thing with The Phantom if it becomes a series like they are hoping. The movie was also a "back-door pilot."

reply

It's not really a back-door pilot.
It's just a Pilot Movie.

A back-door pilot works differently from the way you think it does.

A good example of a back-door pilot would be "The Trial of The Incredible Hulk".

It's called a back-door, because it's a way of sneaking in a pilot.

It's a TV Movie about The Hulk, but it stars Daredevil, and if it was well-received it would have become a Daredevil show.

A pilot movie is just the TV Movie that may or may not be picked up and retooled into a show.

A back-door pilot is more of a spin-off, wherein it's a TV Movie of an existing commodity meant to create a NEW commodity as a result of it's success.

I watched this movie last night. Although it is not great, it was an entertaining movie to watch.

Painkiller Jane the Movie and the series were written, and done completely separate from each other and really had nothing to do with each other except title.

In the comics sold in Europe, the Phantom's suit is blue, not purple. I think it looks cooler and could be an idea for the show? Take a look below and tell me what you think!

I liked it too. I expected it to be bad, and the opening scenes didn't really make me think I was wrong, but as it went on and they brought in the real Phantom-related elements, I was impressed with how well they managed to update it to the present time period. They kept the history of the Phantom unchanged, just modernized the technology at his disposal, which only makes sense. I ended up liking the characters, too, and hope there will be more of this show.
