This piece of crap is even worse than the 1996 attempt!

The story was boring, weak and full of plot holes, the new suit was terrible and I couldn't care less about whether or not any of the characters lived or died.

I don't normally complain about bad movies, but this (as well as the 1996 version) annoys me, because I loved the comics when I was a kid. Why can't they make a decent Phantom movie?!

reply

LOL You sir/lady are really funny. This was 100x better than the 1996 movie and even makes fun of the suit, and has the villains how they should be. The suit is greatly modified and I love it, this is the first time I never laughed at the suit. Everything else was also splended.

They did make a decent Phantom movie--the one with Billy Zane. If you've never read the comics or otherwise know absolutely nothing about the character, I suppose I can see how you might think that movie wasn't very good--but it really did capture the spirit of the character nearly perfectly, in a tale that--well. The plot wasn't the greatest, but it captured the spirit of the character and setting well.

As for this film, it wasn't a terrible outing. It started to explore what it would be like to wake up and have everything you've ever known taken from you, only to be told you belonged in some weird other life. This wasn't the best outing for the character around, but Syfy did surprisingly well. It's a lot better than their usual "giant monster versus other giant monster" fare.

Yes, at least the movie had the lovely Mr. Zane in his prime. The guy here is just pathetic. Certainly not an actor...and Mr. Zane is.

The 1996 film is brilliant and holds up well for me. This was pure crap. They tried to be too clever altering the costume.

reply

While I agree the costume was just dumb, I don't think that's a very important element of the series. I still think that the underlying plot was really, really interesting, and I would have loved to have seen it developed more.

Of, course. I was just trying to bash it for the sake of it. The costume means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

I actually don't fully remember the plot (it might have been something about water contamination or eco-system related?)but I do know it didn't interest me much. That's something that I've always felt needed correcting with the reboots; the plots needed to be more tied to the Phantom as well as the current man behind the mask, and go beyond the corruption route.

Anyway, I do believe in the right hands someone can execute a decent show most would be happy with in the future. Too much good material to not make it happen.

That was the plot of the cartoon show. (http://www.phantomwiki.org/Phantom_2040_(TV_series)). This one (http://www.phantomwiki.org/The_Phantom_(2010_TV_pilot)), a young Kit loses his parents at a young age, so doesn't grow up knowing anything about his heritage or the Phantom's legacy, or anything. He sort of gets pulled into it through--well--let's just say shenanigans.

I actually like the story, about trying to figure out who he was, what he should do, and so on.

I watched the cartoon in the 90's. I must've watched it more recently though for it to pop into my mind.

I also just read over the plot for the 2009 show, it sounds good on paper but I don't think it was executed properly, or in a way that I liked. So maybe with better producers it could've worked out.

reply

Aww. That's a shame. I still quite like the pilot. I'll agree it wasn't the best (the primary villain was an idiot with morons working beneath him, and stupid villains always chafe), but over all I thought it was well done. They didn't rush into Kit accepting everything, but they didn't drag it all out, either. And I have a pet hypothesis about the very end scene, which I'll put in a spoiler tag in case other Phans want to see it yet but haven't.

The scene at the end where the man who'd aided Kit in becoming the Phantom took over the Singh, I tend to believe that he's still on Kit's side. That he's still a follower of the Phantom. When Kit had him by the throat (or collar, I forget; something like that), he said that he'd sworn to aid the Phantom for the rest of his life, and I actually believe it. I'd have liked to watch him slowly dismantle the Brotherhood from within.

I hope ypu are right, because that he would switch sides just like that does not sit right with me.

Saw the pilot for the first time yesterday, after having owned it on DVD the past five years. Cover image put me off that much.

Not a bad pilot, I think it didn't get picked up because it was released at the wrong time on the wrong channel. Would have been a hit if the exact same thing was released on CW within the last three years.

reply

I hope I'm right, too, but sadly we'll never know.

Thing is--honestly? I'd be willing to bet I wasn't right. I mean--look at the inanity of the rest of the characters, and story. The villains were to a one nearly complete idiots, and the story--while I still genuinely like it--had more than a few less-than-good parts about it, let's say. As such, I'd almost be willing to bet Syfy would have just made what's-his-face do a for-realsies face-heel turn, which would have been disappointing and low-brow writing.

As I said, I hope you are right, as in I would like to be.
Of course, I know you're not, and the second statement of your is the accurate one. The mere thought that the Singh would chose him as their new leader ...Consultant, that I can see, but leader?!?

Not that it matters, since it wasn't picked up anyway.

Well, true. Though, kvetching and bantering ideas back and forth is what makes us fans. :-)
