Homage to Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside), perhaps ... but as much a strange mash-up of Spanish & Bollywood sensibilities. Actors were all beautiful and did commendable jobs with a story that, for me, was not at all the "greatest romance" it sold itself as on the DVD box. I've loved great Bollywood films, such as Lagaan, but this bordered on a silly, over-the-top version of Mar Adentro + The Prestige, and didn't actually work for me in the end. We all have our opinions: clearly, some people loved Guzaarish. While I enjoyed the beauty, talented dancing abilities, gorgeous sets and costumes, even some of the humor, and recognize that several of the actors are genuinely gifted, this film ultimately just didn't have the power of the films from which the director borrowed his plot and themes ... perhaps a little more originality would have helped. (Did love the scene where Ethan's mother testified, though ... as a mother, that one hit me hard ... in a good way.) Then again, I'm quite often not a fan of the derivations and copies Hollywood does of some really good European, British, and other foreign films. (Still haven't seen the English language version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, though this one might have me change my tune about re-makes.)
