Tess (spoilers)

Why is she so special that god brought charlie back from the dead so that he could save her life? Does she end up saving the world post-credits?

reply

Exactly what I thought. Are we really supposed to believe that the almighty God brought back some random guy from the dead, so some other random girl wouldn't die 5 years later? Let me guess... God's really into sailing? Or what?

You're an idiot.
So.. if the person isn't your family, they shouldn't be saved? It's all about who's related to you?
YOU are EXPENDABLE. Do you get that? You could die today, and it wouldn't make a difference in the world. Most of us are expendable. This discussion has NOTHING to do with who WE love, or would want to have saved?!! It's about who GOD would choose to save!? This is a ridiculous discussion, you obviously don't get the point at all..

If you watch the movie you know that Tess had a thing for Charlie even in high school. She was really into the guy. When she reappears five years later she catches his interest. Because of this they had an unspoken bond. I guess the director was trying to tell us they were true soul mates. I thought the director fell short of that but plain and simple. These two people were important to each other. Charlie was looking for a reason to get out in the world and if it wasn't for Tess he never would have. Just because someone doesn't save the world doesn't mean they are not important. Charlie was saved, to save Tess, but in the end it's Tess who really saved Charlie. If Charlie would have worked in the graveyard his whole life and played catch with his dead brother it wouldn't have mattered whether he was saved in the beginning.

Mina,

Okay so everyone should go kill themselves bc we havent cured cancer?

YOU ARE RUDE.

Dont you think the population would be a BIT small if everyone who hasnt "changed the world" just went away.

Damn. You just dont get the point of living do you?

If the man I fall in love with has changed my life for the better but hasnt cured cancer (or something that is important enough for your standards) and God decides to just kill him off, that doesnt seem very......GODLY, now does it?

I think this is a valid question. The OP isn't talking about a real person. If you choose to believe in a God or if you choose to believe there was a God in this story who was manipulating the lives and deaths of the characters, it is very fair to ask why save Charlie to save Tess. This "God" allows people to die all the time. (Sam died. Florio died. They were both much more exceptional characters than Tess.) What makes Tess different? The movie really didn't do enough character development for Tess, aside from a few sappy conversations. I never got the impression that she was all that wonderful. One could argue that as a young woman it was impressive that she was attempting to sail around the world, but she was also stupid enough to sail right into a storm and ended up becoming the damsil in distress; that somewhat negates her status as a heroine. I would argue that her rescue is meant to play the role of saving Charlie by giving him permission to break the deal with Sam. Sam is also free then to "move on." Without a good reason to break their deal, they would have continued this way until Charlie died. By saving Tess Charlie saves himself and frees Sam. The fact that Charlie cared for her and saved her in itself is more important that her actual character. She could have been anyone.

I agree that she doesn't seem that special. In fact, I found her face downright unattractive and somewhat unpleasant, especially when she bunched up her face and cried in one scene. Why were all the women in the movie unattractive, by the way? And what was with the wrinkly-necked older woman wearing an extremely low-cut dress who came to announce her husband's death? That was bizarre.
