Why is there a thick accented British dude in this?

I love the accent like everyone else but it made no sense here.

He's Joe "the Anthesist" Carabino from the book, but for some unexplainable reason, he is renamed Alistair Wooley.

My belief is that Augustus Prew was cast because of his accent. The character is an upbeat guy and kinda alto eago to Charlie's character. The broad Englishness of his accent serves to add to the contrast and works well in my opinion.

I just have this urge to smack that Brit guy whenever he opens his mouth. That annoying voice coupled with the ridiculously strong accent...And I can't make out what he says whatsoever.

That's because you're a half-wit.

reply

I have to agree, I found his silly accent highly annoying... and I'm English!

This movie sucks and honestly, his accent is probably the best part of it.

I thought he was Australian, which wouldn't be so odd given that they were on the Pacific coast, and it was filmed in Canada. But this to me is typical of movies made in Canada. Their way of injecting humour doesn't resonate with American viewers. Apparently, having an Australian guy there means something to them, but we just find it out of place.

I was expecting him to say "cor blimey, Charles me old mucker" at some point.

I found it to be completely random too. I presume the character had been living in the States for a while but kept his accent, as I can't imagine why you'd go to all the trouble of getting a visa (or if you'd even be accepted) to merely work in a graveyard.

The Trivia section says that the character in the book is supposed to be an older russian immigrant, but the director was so impressed by the actor's screen test that he changed the character completely.
And he did say it was his anniversary party at some point, so he probably married an american because he fell in love, and it just turns out she lived there, and maybe he liked the town, why wouldn't he? It seems like a charming place! I actually want to live somewhere in the Pacific Northwest someday, preferably a small town. I like their charm.

He seemed way out of place, but maybe that ways the point?
