It won the Golden Lion Prize

What do you think?

reply

Low rating on IMDb (already)...

reply

Yeah, just wondering why such a bad rate! Maybe, now that it will gain popularity, it will raise.

Maybe there is someone here who had the chance to see the film and who could share with us his opinion about it.

At MAMI 2011, Mumbai, at least 40 percent people left after the first 15 minutes. The movie was cheered by some when it ended.

yeah when there's just 19 votes a bad vote can pull the whole rating down - don't mind it this early

Mind you, if you take a look at the voting breakdown, 17 of 22 users have given an 8+ rating and 13 users has voted it a 10. So don't mind the poor rating for now.

Today's Financial Times (London) gave it 5 stars as best film of the Venice Festival. The FT did also say that the only person who seemed not to like it amongst the newspaper critics in Venice was the person from the International Herald Tribune(IHT) which is a NYT/ Washington Post publication.Hence, this probably means the NYT,WP et al will also give it poor ratings.
No doubt because there are no car chases;explosions;CGI;guns etc etc etc.
As it has not yet been released, we will have to ignore the press and make up our own minds(fancy that!) and go and see it ourselves.

What a bigoted, moronic thing to say. You have no credibility now.

And FYI, the IHT critic in question is British:

I saw it last night at the festival du nouveau monde in Montreal. Unfortunately, the print they were supposed to screen is lost somewhere; the previous festival doesn't know where it went; so we had to watch the distributor's promotional DVD copy... The quality was poor and every so often the text "this is for promotional use only" would appear for about 10 sec... Not the ideal way to see the movie.

Nonetheless, I was thrilled about it. The mise-en-scene is incredibly dynamic, and the art direction is enthralling. I left the movie feeling as if I had just walked out of someone's feverish dreams. Despite the stylized nature of both the performances and the direction, the experience was so immersive that I never found it to be over the top. Sokurov's vision throughout the film demonstrates a filmmaker working with the utmost confidence and understanding of his craft.

Very impressed.

I'm delighted. Besides Refn's Drive, this is the 2011 movie I most want to see (not just because it won the Golden Lion; I'm a huge fan of Sokurov and I love interpretations of Faust). Drive is thankfully coming out here in America this Friday, but I sure hope this movie is released here soon. Oh well, if not on the big screen it will come to DVD eventually, but that will be way too long of a wait.

I saw it this morning at TIFF. About 30 minutes into it I really, really wanted to walk out. I thought it was a mess, I didn't like the characters, and it was really difficult to follow. Now, this could be because the sound was just awful and sometimes the subtitles came on too early or too late. Also, all the characters were talking, screaming, laughing at the same time and because the sound was poor, everybody but the main character sounded the same to me. So, as someone who doesn't understand German, I had no idea who was saying what. The movie almost ended and I had no idea what was going on. It was chaotic from start to finish.

On the other hand, the cinematography is beautiful and some shots were just incredibly pleasing to watch.

I think you have to be a die-hard Sukorov fan to really enjoy and appreciate this film, and I can see why it got respect, but I still can't believe that it was the best film at Venice this year....

I will say that I agree with most of what you wrote in the second paragraph. But, I wasn't expecting realism here. I really did try to give it my full attention, but I found it incredibly difficult to follow. Again, I have to blame it on the sound - it was way too crisp to the point that I had to put my hands over my ears a few times as it was really irritating me (cinema 2 at TBLB has apparently been having sound problems all week, and all the other films I saw there had very crisp sound) - which is really too bad as I am actually a fan of these types of films and was looking forward to getting lost in the fantasy.
Also, I think I can safely say that this film is not for everyone.

5 from me. Too dark, blurry, fuggy, slow,... Vulgar when not necessary, with all those push-and-shove's, and narrow spaces the actors found themselves in. I know that's what the director wanted to underline, but I don't like it.
