One big mataphor

I am surprised no one has pointed out how this is one big metaphor for christianity.

An all powerful being gifting freewill hoping that we will do the right thing.

One person choosing to sacrifice himself for the good of all the others.

The presense of evil and their vanquishing.

I could go on.

No *beep* Sherlock.

I bet you thought you were being really bright and deductive when you figured that and then subsequently posted it on here.

It is not a metaphor for Christianity as the programmer (God)is portrayed in a way more consistent with speculative physics than Religion. The idea is that a quantum computer can create our universe as we perceive it and yes a teenage girl could be in charge of the simulation and possibly participate in it. The key is understanding that the program need bot be very complicated if it simply generates a virtual reality containing all possible quantum outcomes (histories) arising form initial conditions. Of course to the avatars in the simulation the programmer will appear to have Godlike powers but in actual fact the programmer does not even know what the simulation will create as understanding the generator does not mean knowing all the histories. However the programmer can be like a personal God since they could interfere from time to time to prune the histories and may have some control over which history a conscious avatar will experience.

I suspect very few people have seen this movie, which is why the debate is so muted. I agree that it is not a metaphor for Christianity as the big guy was a weak and pale imitation of what Christ should be. I guess they were going for "Thought provoking"….. but I suspect they ended up with a mismatch of theological hogwash that non-Christians will find preachy and Christians will find theologically offiensive.

I have bought the movie and just watched it. I found it very boring...

My problem is that I didn't get it at all. What was all about? What happened (suddenly some people have died and then they were alive)? What was the young girl? An angel or what? And the fat guy always in front of the computer?

I didn't get the message and the meaning of the characters: the girl and boy trying to get a job, the young woman dating a married man that she's met in the cinema, etc.

What was all about?

reply

Christianity? Not particularly. I did see it as asking the questions why does God let people suffer, what's the meaning of life, etc.

But I wasn't particularly impressed with the metaphors or the depth. The most charitable thing I could say is that maybe Elly is a teenaged girl in the distant future with access to powerful computers that can create detailed virtual reality. She chose to create this virtual world, or perhaps was given the basic world by her teacher as a homework assignment on the nature of God and told to speculate on answers. But her answers are typical of any teenager, where the answers are too pat and everything still tends toward a happy ending. For example, we wonder how God could exist and not directly involve himself in our lives. Elly has no answer and can't resist the temptation to involve herself.

Christianity = Jesus Christ

Was there a mention of Jesus?

Cici: "Oh, I'm sorry my bad, I thought you were someone else".
Ghost Face: "That's OK, I am"

It would be close were it not for the avatar's comment that the person sacrificing himself was to have no vested interested in the person he was sacrificing his life for. (She said that's why Todd couldn't do it.) Christ had a vested interest in the people he died for. He died for them because he loved them.

Reminds me of the tv series "Joan of Arcadia" with Amber Tamberlyn years ago. She played a high school student who God would visit. God never took the same form twice. Once God was a little girl in a park who asked Tamberlyn to toss her ball back to her. Once she was ordered to take a part time job even though she was busy only to be held up. Once her father, Joe Mantagna, the local police chief, was taken prisoner by a young man who was desperate with a wife and kids. They bonded but the guy made the wrong choice and ended up dead by being killed by Mantagna.

But Joan had a better cast and stories.

I dont think its necessarily about Christianity just about god/creater. What is the meaning of life and all that jazz. To help others? Do something special for another person.

reply

yes, it's too silly for its own good.

i mostly will not be able to answer your reply, since marissa mayer hacked my email, no notification
