What I mean is, is the movie merely inspired by Angry Birds, or does it claim to actually tell the whole story behind the "Angry Birds" mobile application and is sanctioned by the app developer?

I'm sure it was at least inspired by Angry Birds because it's called "Rio" and it has birds trapped in cages and it has a big fight scene where birds fight monkeys, which is the theme of Angry Birds. But I'm not sure if this is the "official" movie

it has promotional ties to the game (previews and ads and free game codes and movie name) but has absolutely nothing to do with the game. it's false advertising to get some viewers.
shareRovio just used the release of the Rio movie to create a game including some backgrounds and characters from the movie to sell another Angry Birds game.
There is a REAL "Rio" videogame out though, for the youngsters.

As above said,Rovio used the film as the basis for a version of Angry Birds. Rio has no direct ties to Angry Birds
