IMDB ratings system

How does this thing work? I don't use IMDB much but wanted to comment on this.

I looked at the voting breakdown and this film has votes on either end. Now while I don't think the film is a 10, it sure as hell isn't a 1, 2 or 3 star movie. That's just stupid. Only if you haven't seen films or know nothing about films do you rate this a 1. In fact, I haven't seen that many movies that are a 1. Maybe The Room, but that is maybe a two star film. So I see this with a number of 1 ratings and I have to shake my head. Folks are just trying to make a point.

I'd say this is about a 7 for me. Sure it isn't a big budget movie with bells and whistles, but we can't just watch over produced stuff 24/7. Just my two cents.

It really shouldn't surprise you. Let the general public vote or comment on about anything and you'll get a barrel of stupid. They tend to average out after several thousand. But, even then, it's not a good way to choose a film to watch for your specific tastes.

reply

Yeah, maybe they should introduce the metacritic method of having critics reviews also average into the general public ones. It is ridiculous the way people rate movies 1 though.

reply

critics have a good bit of morons in their number also....

Hahaha true but with movies like these, the IMDB rating is more exposed as broken. The critics reviews and fest reviews have been generally good to excellent wih a few bad ones. That would mean you'd expect a good rating here but you see the 1s and you think what the hell. Sure there are lots of ratings above 7 but they don't seem to have counted as much as the lower ones. But I agree some critics are ridiculous too. However to be fair there are so few votes on this movie that what we are seeing is positive and negative knee jerkers. This is not a 1 or a 10 but more a 7 or tops 8 if you're feeling generous. That's my opinion. Maybe after a few thousand votes, well see it look more realistic. Only a joker would vote this a 1. Really. I mean I only came on to IMDB to discuss this film. I don't hang out on this site much at all.

It is really quite absurd that 22 people have voted this film 1/10. But it is all relative and you would expect the score to rise to at least 6.5 when the dust settles and more than a thousand people have voted. Think of it like this, Shawshank Redemption (the number one film on many greatest films lists) has had 17,698 people vote 1/10. Even though that only accounts for 3.3% of the total votes it is obvious that there are a lot of people that do not really know about films or simply hold grudges against the director, writer or members of the cast. Then you have people who get on the bandwagon and will not challenge the going popular opinion of a film, like for example I thought Kickass was a bad film for many reasons I won't bore you with here yet that film is currently 8.1/10!! So am I supposed to believe that Kickass is on equal footing with The Terminator, Twelve Monkeys or Casino?!!! Lol really IMDB scoring is a joke.

a lot of top movies have a ghuge number of 1s as of late due to the mass action by the dark knight fans. they were spammign all forums asking peopel to create IMDB accounts to vote top 10 movies a 1 so the dark knight could rise above. this is what pushed godfather out of its first place to begin with.
also a lot of people i see telling everyone to for example vote 1 to every movie uwe boll makes, even if they havent seen it, because "hes a bad director". and same goes for certain actors and whatnot. somep eople are jsut stupid, like if they dont understand plot they vote it 1. imdb system is very very flawed, however i found that following critics often gets you much worse results. i may have unusual taste, but i learnt to totaly ignore critics.

It's a solid 6 and possibly a 7. The people giving it 1 have an agenda or are mentally disabled. Good ending good acting pace is a bit slow but I enjoyed it.

reply

Probably a bit of both, folks with an agenda and also a bit unable to understand the film. I get not liking it and giving it a lower grade, but 1 or 2 stars out of 10? That's ridiculous.

reply

The same goes for people who rate stuff 10. So it should be balanced.

reply

Not necessarily. To me 10 means does exactly what it says on the tin. So... Flash Gordon would be a 10 for me. :P

Too bad, but many on here have one agenda or another that colors the way they vote regardless of the merits of the movie. For example, if some were to rate a movie where a fellow with visual impairments and a wooden leg, who by the way speaks only French with a lisp and has an appetite for old Piaf tunes (and this is a drama folks) and by the final reel overcomes something or another and finds satisfaction with his underage niece then they would choose a fairly high number. Maybe 8. I mean, even though the thing is poorly filmed, has the production quality of an off brand of grated tuna and is hard to understand because the sound was recorded on an IPhone 3 it simply shouts 'culture' or 'redemption' or...well, you get the point. Lousy French films garner high ratings, usually. Well made American action films score much worse. Some directors pay the price for a movie they made twenty years ago, but some are darlings. The ratings are totally arbitrary and not worth much, compared to the reviews. My advice: read a few of the reviews if you wonder about a film.

you guys are right. I saw this brilliant film and I was shocked by the low rating here. Makes no sense.
