Am I the only one who like this more than A Prophet?

It's not by much but I give R an 8, and Prophet a 7.

I get that A Prophet came 1st so everybody gives extra points for originality while dismiss R as a copy. But prison films aren't new, and both were probably made around the same time. I doubt makers of R saw Prophet and said lets go copy it. By the time Prophet came out, R was probably well into production.

The main reason I liked R slightly more is I liked the characters there more. They were more compelling. I didn't really care whether the Prophet guy lived or died.

R almost lost me by having a double climax. But the Arab kid's death was so great. It was all worth it.

I second that. I would also give it a much higher rating than you did.

The arab kid does not die, he gets that hot oil they mentioned earlier thrown to his face.

You have to be iconic and original if you want a perfect 10 from me.
I don't give 9s and 10s easily.

right right right... they just had him coffeed, real cool ending

reply

Me either, but prison has not been lensed nor portrayed without preaching like this before on screen. To each his own. I hope these directors make more outstanding work, which one of them (Tobias Lindholm) already has with two of the leads from this one. A Hijaking, which word has it is impressive.

Here's the trailer:

JUST had him coffeed? Have you ever been burned by sugar? If you pour water on it, it still keeps on burning on the inside. It's one of the most painful things I've experienced, and that was just on my hand, and it covered only 0.5 cm of my skin, and Rashid got it all over his face. Think about what that would do with his eyes.

Nice job on the spoiler there.

I agree. I had heard a lot of good things about "A Prophet", but in the end, didn't think it was that great. "R" is a much grittier version of "A Prophet".

I also liked R more and yes it's even grittier

I went to a talk with one of the directors of R, Michael Noer last month and just heard about this as well. The directors of R found out about Prophet while filming, so there was never any copying present :)
They were a bit sad to find out that Prophet was being published just before theirs, which meant that R wouldn't be seen as an original film. I think it was while editing someone called one of the directors and said ''I just saw this film... Prophet. It was amazing. However, it is just like the one we're making''. That's just too bad :/ But doesn't make it less amazing!

I haven't seen Prophet yet, but I really want to now, and see which one I like best :)
