If I was Jason Bateman, I don't think I'd press charges

It might sound crazy to a lot of people, but after seeing the film and learning about these characters, I don't5 think I would press charges. If this was real life, I probably would, but the way the film was depicted the kid who played prank was being tormented with guilt. Yes, granted, that doesn't forgive what he did. However, I think after Jason Bateman met him and saw him at the hospital he realized he is very remorseful for what he did , and if his son died it would make him struggle with his guilt even more. A lot of parents don't like to see other kids suffer, even if they deserve punishment, because its not going to bring his son back and it will certainly ruin the life of the other child. Im not saying kids shouldn't pay the consequences, when someone is clearly feeling so guilt-ridden b/c of his actions, I don't see what good it would do send him to jail.

I would press charges without a doubt or reservation. So what if he and his father had a bad relationship? That's no justification for what he did, victimizing someone who had nothing to do with it. His life should be ruined for ruining Ben's. You can't say "there shouldn't be consequences" and then say "don't do anything, because he probably feels bad." I didn't even get the idea that he felt bad about what he did. He felt bad that he got caught.

Well Jason was already feeling uneasy about the situation when Ben sent the picture which Frye was taunting him for, he looked shocked when he saw Ben wallowing in despair while others were mocking him for the picture (which was presumably spread around by Frye) and he even visited Ben in hospital with a look of remorse on his face. I think it's pretty clear he felt bad about what he did.

That makes no sense. If the kid had no remorse why would he engage in a conversation with the father online and go to the hospital of his own choosing to see how the kid was doing. He was a brat but not a monster.

I'm guessing that was intended as a reply to blackferret-1, but it was sent to me instead.
