I don't understand why Fred just loses it right before he steps into the trap. He says "I thought we would make it." What does that mean? At that point they still had a chance to make it, why did he panic suddenly?

Because it was poorly written and the director wanted to build tension to lead into the bear trap.

If there'd been a real bear bumbling around, it might've livened the movie up a little.

Because Fred knew in advance that it was closed off,and dangerous , yet he convince his friends to go along anyway. So indirectly he cause their death,and wanted to say he was sorry to his girlfriend because he realize that he didn't know what he was doing.

Yea but at that point no one had died yet so that doesn't really add up. Not to mention it seemed like they could all get out at that point as they were just relaxing on the edge of the mountain. Except for maybe Luke who pissed me off all movie. I'm glad he died.
