What were the flashbacks about?

They were totally incomprehensible, at least in the Netflix version (85min). Maybe someone has seen the 90min version and can tell me what they meant?

Chloe was not able to save a dying boy at the hospital where she works was all I could figure.

It was all a set-up to allow the director to run with the oldest horror cliché in the book. The guilt - ridden nurse can't bring herself to finish off the murderer of her 4 friends, so she leaves him alive with a knife and somehow just expects to escape. Duh!🐭
