Didn't make sense (SPOILERS)

-- SPOILER ALERT !

I found it really, really weird that Ray Liotta's character never told Jeff's wife about the infidelity with his own wife. Especially after it became clear that A) he wasn't getting any money from Jeff and B) he and Rebecca was splitting up. I think most people would -- even if they weren't particularly vengeful.

Yeah I know, they tried to address that with his little speech on the bridge about him "not being a guy like that". But that doesn't make sense, seeing as he just tried to squeeze 100 K out of Jeff over it. At least IMO. Did anyone else find that a bit unbelievable?

i think that big speech he gave jeff was enough cause he made jeff feel like sh!t. i think even if he did get all of the money he would have still thrown it over the bridge because it just showed what kind of person jeff was and he would have given his speech all over again

then there is the other option where its just a movie...everything doesnt always relate to real life. and it wouldnt have been such a great movie if the wife found out from someone else.

I suppose your first point is conceivable, yet I still think it's not likely that a person would lose the one they love from cheating with a mutual friend, and then simply "allow" the cheater to keep his relationship. But I suppose there are exceptions.

I have to say your last sentence seems a tad absurd to me, though. Using that logic, any plothole or inconsistency in a movie can be brushed aside. Of course any piece of fiction follows its own rules and are separate to reality. That doesn't mean they shouldn't make sense within the established borders of that fiction.

500k.... What?

He asked for 100k and Jeff did give him 75K.... it wasn't about the money, it was about the choice Jeff was going to make.

If he had only made the right choice alot of things wouldn't have happened. His wife was a cheater too and a worse one at that....she was actually in an affair and he only did it 2x while one was sort of forced.

Yes sorry, 100 K is of course right (I edited it).

Anyway, the amount of money and/or him trying to make Jeff make the right choice, and whether Jeff's wife was also a cheater (and a much "worse" one, I agree about that) -- it's all kind of irrelevant. I still say it's absolutely improbable that a man would be left by his own wife over a piece of adultery and then just leave the other couple alone to go on as if nothing had happened, letting Jeff keep it all a secret to his own wife. Simply makes no sense to me.

Well....had they filmed a scene between Ray's character and his wife maybe she admitted she was more at fault or that she wanted it as well. Why ruin 2 family's if you don't have too. Eitehr way...in the end, it wouldn't have mattered because Banks' character was a cheat as well.

Jeff had a very young child, and I got the feeling Liotta's character didn't want to "wreck" their home. And as he said, Jeff was reckless and was going to do it on is own. Its actually very common for infidelity not to be outed.

Side note... that was the best acting I've seen out of Liotta in YEARS.

What a shock. A cheap shot from a bitter Republican.

Sir, I'm going to crack your *beep* head open!

Well a Prius is definitely a car and Obama is definitely the president of the U.S. so... Also, your bias is definitely apparent.

Ray Liotta's character's intentions were quite clear. He wanted to give Jeff a chance to fix his mistake by admitting to his wife saying he cheated her. In case if Jeff fails to utilize that chance, he also wanted him to teach a lesson by making him feel *beep* For that he didn't want to commit another mistake (by either hurting Jeff physically, or by taking his money, or in any other way) so his choice was to ask him money and to throw it in the river by which would make Jeff feel like a failure and fool. Ray Liotta's character was very successful in doing that. I liked what he did.

> I think most people would -- even if they weren't particularly vengeful.

Yes. Most people would. And Ray's character did say that he wanted to kill Jeff. Or fvck Jeff's wife up the ass in front of the child.

But, he calmed down and decided that there was a better way. Any physical response, like punching him, would be stooping to the level of an animal and actually be letting Jeff off easily.

In another part of the movie, Jeff said that he deserves anything that happens to him. Had Ray punched him, Jeff might feel absolved of his sins and start to feel better. Ray didn't want that to happen so he made Jeff feel like crap instead.

> But that doesn't make sense, seeing as he just tried to squeeze 100 K out of Jeff over it.

He never tried to squeeze money out of Jeff. As he explained, that was to force Jeff to confront his situation. But, Jeff tried to take the easy way out.
