I really wanted him to kil... (spoilers)

I really wanted him to kill the preacher. He was a self righteous fool and a really annoying character. I quite liked the film but he was the only character that really irritated me and I was looking forward to seeing die!

same here. he doesn't kill him because he's religious? what the f kind of bs is that?

reply

It was the strongest and heartwarming moment of a very great movie!

reply

It wasn't heartwarming at all. It was a self righteous man who thought that he deserved to live because of the particular piece of bollocks that he had chosen to believe in. The movie was ok but this scene annoyed the hell out of me!

First off, if you are using God for self gain, he will know and you will not inherit the kingdom of Heaven. If you are using God to do righteous deeds then it is not bad at all. Try guess where did the preacher fall into? I don't care if any of you believe me at all, but I had did bad things (not killing or stealing) and I have asked for forgiveness to God and people i hurted and it does lessen your burden. If that person doesn't choose to forgive or believe it is no longer your problem. Christians aren't perfect, but you can spot a double sided Christian as opposed to a righteous one. Have a good day folks.

I thought you were going to say it would've been okay if both Driver and Killer killed each other or went to jail.

reply

It was power until they drew it out and he got on his knees and starting preaching, then I started to roll my eyes.

If he just made a quick plea and then like closed his eyes and waited for the end, it would have been far more effective.

the preacher had tremendous passion ... i don't see any of his actions as overblown or melodramatic ... the scene was beautiful (even though there were inconsistencies with the lighting) ..

reply

Nah... not because he was religious... because he was repentant. Religion was simply the avenue for his repentance. Dwayne's character felt that he was truly apologetic and saw the good that had come from this man's heart.. He was also willing to accept responsibility for his past actions.

I don't think the OP either watched the scene or got it, first the preacher did not for a moment think he deserved to live, he didn't beg for his life and in fact went to great lengths to explain that he knew what he did was wrong and that he was ready for whatever happened to him.
When all the talking was done he didn't try to run, he forgave the man about to kill him despite not getting forgiveness for himself and he closed his eyes and prayed for his murderer instead of himself and accepted his fate.
On top of all that, we see from the flashback that he was a lookout, not a triggerman, he was not OK with the brothers being killed and afterward he sought to make up for the bad he had done by helping kids going down the same path he did.
If you replace the word "preacher" with junkie or thug I am sure the OP probably wouldn't have minded him living, more than likely he either wants to be "shocking" with his statement or just didn't really see what was going on.

Not really, grasshopper.

Judge a man by his actions, not his words. Was the preacher living a life of hedonism, luxury, and sin? No, so what self gain was there in his life? His life as a preacher was devoted to others, not for himself.

World is changing because the church follows the world. Jesus said it in the bible that he is not of this world and his followers shouldn't act like it either. That explains your preacher concept. A true preacher and his church would probably be really poor.

> he doesn't kill him because he's religious?

He didn't kill him because there was no reason to. The preacher learned his own lesson from that tragic night and turned his life around. Vengeance would be pointless.

I honestly didn't care at that point in the movie, becuase I was already leaning towards not liking it by then. However, I think some of you may be missing what was going on.

The character didn't want that on his shoulders. Call it superstition or whatever you want, but he feared the "consequences" of killing a preacher.

I think it would've been far more powerful for him to have accepted the preacher's repentance and then killed him for what he had done instead of just letting him go.

Then he wouldn't have really forgiven him, would he?

Why would he "send him to God" if he forgave him?

I was offering some rationale as to why he may have let the preacher live. You did the same. I don't disagree with you that he may have actually forgiven the preacher. Fair enough point.

But if he had killed him, there is no forgiveness there at all. There is no point in killing him at all at the stage in the game.

Now.... SPOILER
If Driver had killed the Preacher, he most likely would have left... And never would have found out who set him & his bro up....

While the Driver kept revenge on his mind for ten years, everyone else had went their own seperate ways, the only one that made the most significant change was the preacher. He accepted what he was involved with and told Driver that he had regretted what happened but said he wouldn't've changed anything because he was a better man now and that moment had changed him for the better. He never said: "DON'T SHOOT ME! I'M RELIGIOUS!" He begged for forgiveness and said that he forgived Driver if he did kill him.
