This film was highly entertaining to those who like subtle and complex characterisations (rather like you and me, real people) and story lines that don't tie up the loose ends and which invite the audience to make their own interpretation. Leigh's films will have little appeal to audiences that demand conventional plotting with traditional or reassuring outcomes, broad characterisations and films that by and large patronise viewers by doing the thinking for them. Having said that (respectfully I hope) I have issues with a number of Leigh's films for what seems to be a rather condescending stance, my misinterpretation possibly, but Another Year is one of his warmest and amongst the most accomplished of contemporary dramas for many a year.
