Why was Colossus in this movie?

He was probably my favorite character and it was cool seeing him brought to life with some decent CGI, but why was he in it? Is he a regular in Deadpool comics? Do the two characters have some special connection? (I wouldn't know, I never really followed Deadpool.)

As I said, I enjoyed seeing him in this, but he seemed a bit extraneous - like they just wanted to stick another well-known or X-Men-connected character in there. But he didn't seem necessary to the plot or like he and Deadpool had any relationship beyond just being acquaintances.

I was glad that they finally made him Russian - true to his comic roots (unlike the way he was portrayed in the various X-Men movies - the actor in those movies looked great in his human form, but he had an American accent, with no mention that he was Russian). The only thing that bugged me is he looked and sounded a bit too old. I know it's hard to tell with him being metal, but he sounded middle-aged. It would've been cool if they showed him transform once so we could have seen that Piotr is a young man.

He was one of the few X-Men they were allowed to use.

I may be wrong, but originally, it was supposed to be Cable.

Basically to represent the senior leadership of the XMen and keep the movie under its relatively low budget.

Based on box office performance we can expect to see the next Deadpool flick to be stuffed to the gills with A-lost X-Men reps :)

He's an iconic X-Man.

He was also one of my all time favorite X-Men and he looked great but sounded like a jerkoff.

I loved his battles with The Juggernaut.

I'd be hard pressed to explain why any X-Men appeared in this movie, but I think it'd have something to do with making clear that Deadpool is more very loosely connected to them than a Marvel character in his own right. If it would've been up to me, I'd have gone the routes that the Punisher, Spider-Man and Fantastic Four movies took (unlike Marvel Studios' universe), and it would've been stand-alone or at least "X-Force" (which involves a setting that is in the future of that of the "X-Men") or "Weapon X" (but approached in a manner differently from the Wolverine origin story, which should have included Omega Red).

I think the first replier has it right when he says it's a matter of rights. And I do agree that he's superfluous. Personally, I found his inclusion rather grating and think it would've been better to leave out any X-men references aside from the verbal ones.
Also, I may be wrong - not being a rabid comic reader - but isn't one of Deadpool's themes that no one really wants to work with him? So why the recruiting efforts?
