Why does Hugh Grant sound nothing like himself?

Or is it just me??? Everyone else is instantly recognisable by their FAMILIAR and DISTINCTIVE sounding voices!

I wasn't aware the Pirate Captain was played by Hugh Grant until the credits went up.
Apart from his acting in Maurice I've never been a particular fan of Grant- but
credit where credit is due. He made a good pirate-and out of charactor. He normally plays a snotty little creep.

It's not just me then! Personally, I think the good captain sounds more like Alexander Armstrong than Hugh Grant. (I wonder if that was the intention?)

reply

I imagined him sounding better if John Cleese had voiced him.

reply

Personally I wouldn't have cast Hugh Grant in that role, even though he managed not to sound the way he normally does. I would have picked Robert Lindsay, though Alexander Armstrong would have been a good choice too.

I actually like Hugh in this... Very good characterisation of the pirate captain... Very likeable too

The original Pirate Captain was Martin Clunes who recorded all his dialogue before the American distributors demanded someone better known in the US should play the Captain so Hugh Grant was drafted in to re-record all of Clunes' dialogue.

reply

Because he's playing a pirate captain :)
