Is this movie now irrelevant in the franchise?

I have an issue with this movie and how it fits in the storyline which I hope will be addressed in a future X-Men or Wolverine movie. I still think this is a great movie.

With what transpired in X-Men: Days of Future Past, one can argue that it makes the previous X-Men movies irrelevant. I don't think any previous X-Men is irrelevant for several reasons. I think the way in which Logan makes his way to the academy, tries to find out about himself and his past, and his growing fondness and warmth toward Professor X and all the X-Men is probably very similar. His way of interaction with the characters would be the same as would many other things. Even X-Men: The Last Stand is relevant for how Jean's death haunted him and caused him much pain over the years and made him appreciate her and his friends even more.

With the timeline altered, Jean nor Scott nor the Professor (technically) ever died, the school is still open and running and therefore there would be no need for Logan to drift away and live off the land in loneliness. That ultimately led to him making the trip to Japan. However, with Logan never making the trip, he never rescues Mariko from her corrupt father and grandfather. Does her grandfather, as determined as he was to be immortal, still try to go after Wolverine when he's completely an X-Man with all of his support by his side?

I feel there are many questions left unanswered at this point and if there is any movie left "irrelevant" in the franchise, this one would be the closest. What do you guys think?

You wouldn't have a new time line without this old time line first, Also, Logan still carries with him memories of this into the new time line. Even Xavier of the new time line sees into Logan's mind and has knowledge of what happened in the old time line. So no, it in no way negates the relevance of this or any of the previous Xmen films.

Whose idea was it for the word LISP to have an S in it?

It's very likely the events of the film would mostly repeat in the new timeline. Yashida would still obsess over Wolverine's immortality (the World War II scene where Wolverine rescues Yashida would have no reason to change). Regardless of how events may have changed, and it's very likely he would still track Wolverine down and goad him into coming to Japan.

i agree - the continuity no longer allows for this timeline with UNDEAD jean (which is slightly creepy). something else would drive logan throughout this battle, but yashida would still long for logan's power and draw him to japan somehow. since jean is forever unattainable, i hope mariko makes a comeback; yukio too. let jean feel jealous, for once.

I hope Mariko and Yukio come back as well.

I would laugh so hard if this became a sub-plot (because it couldn't take up a whole movie) where the villains tried this "again" and Wolverine went "Edge of Tomorrow" on them.

I agree! I loved Mariko and Yukio in the story, and I really would like to see them brought back, and also cannot help but chuckle at the "Edge of Tomorrow"/"Groundhog Day" concept.

I would assume that the basic events of this movie still occur in the new timeline, since the main instigating event at WWII took place and set everything in motion regardless of the timeline change. So outside of Jean being dead... 90% of this movie would happen almost exactly the same in the new timeline.

The thing though is that Yashida is not a bad guy. He's a good person whose fear of death overcame his better nature in the final hour.

Before then he seemed to legitimately believe that he was doing Wolverine a favor by offering him a chance at a normal life and the reason he believed this was because he saw that Wolverine was suffering. Had Jean not died, Wolverine very well could have been in a better place at that point in his life and if Yashida saw that Wolverine was happy and actively using his abilities to do good, I doubt that he would have been able to rationalize trying to instead grab Wolverine by force when he still had time on the clock and thus was able to see clearer.

Although, the only reason he ended up doing otherwise in this movie was because his final hour fear allowed him to rationalize his actions by convincing himself that Wolverine didn't deserve his "immortality," whereas he did because he would use it to help his family. So take away that rational and I don't think he could have done it when the end was near either.

Yes, it is. It's basically X-Men 4 to Last Stand's 3. The end of that time line basically.

the movie starts in the 40's so the future past timeline when his thrown back to the 70's wont affect the fact his delusion with wolverine, that wont change and will probably happen again in the new time line

True, it is an alternate timeline now, with The Wolverine happening as in the movie, then another version with the same WW2 origins, then it splits with Days of Future Past.

To me the answer is yes and no. It's is irrelevant to the proper timeline because DoFP reset everything from the failed assaination of Trask onward. But it still one of many possible timelines. There is propably a timeline that DoFP failed and mutants were wiped out. There another one where Jean stays dead while the rest got rebooted. We happened to watch the one where everyone survived and probaly lived long lives. All outcomes are valid, but this movie is irrelevant to the ongoing events of new X-Men movies. Wolverine remebers, and Professor X does to some extent, but nobody else knows what happened. It's like the new Star Trek. With the exception of Spock Prime, everything else from his universe is irrelevant to the story ongoing.
