One of the most "film-film" comic book movies.

I know that sounds pretentious as hell, but I don't mean it to be. I love me some MCU. I have ZERO against the more bouncy and colorful comic books films. Hell, some are among my favorite of all time (Avengers 1 & 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man, Superman: The Movie).

What I mean is, The Wolverine offers an amazing counter-balance to the more outlandish comic book films I didn't even know I wanted. It has a quiet, purposeful pacing and serious tone that does a near perfect job of grounding this world while still making us buy it's more fantastical elements. Almost every side character feels well-rounded enough to standout as more than just canon fodder or thin villains and ally's. The action is intense and never overblown or too drawn out (I know people have issues with the final battle, but I simply don't agree), and at the end of the day the film has the balls to make the hero essentially lose the big fight at the end. He doesn't deal the finishing blow to the villain, he merely finishes what the villains daughter started. Not even the ending of TDK has Batman lose in the way Wolverine loses. It's not about Wolverine coming in and saving the day. It's about Wolverine saving himself.

I think this one of the most underrated comic book films ever made. I'm surprised Fox had the balls to greenlit a Wolverine film that is largely a drama more than a full-throttle action film.

I think it's the only X-men brand movie that actually looks like a movie. It has only a small cast but it's IMO the best looking of the X-men movies.

I agree that this film actually feels like it's more of a character piece than any other Marvel or Fox superhero film.

Or, as the typical comic book movie fan would say, "dis movie is waaay too slow n boring. Derp!"

If the typical comic book movie fan said that, The Wolverine wouldn't have its good rating.

I agree with you for the most part. I enjoyed this movie, although the pacing (for me) seemed a bit awkward. But the film was well made, and did seem more like a film rather than a popcorn flick. Don't get me wrong, I have really enjoyed most of the Marvel films that have come out, but this one is just more... cerebral, for lack of a better term.

You and I disagree on one point in particular:

(I know people have issues with the final battle, but I simply don't agree)

I'm not a Wolverine comic book fanboy, crying that, "The Silver Samurai is nothing like he is in the comics!" No, my problem with that Pacific Rim/Iron Man suit does not fit in with the style of the rest of the movie for me. I wish they would have toned down his outfit a bit, and just made him a badass samurai with a normal sized suit of adamantium armor with all the benefits of that monstrosity he climbed into. It would have actually seemed more epic and real to me considering the tone of the rest of the movie.

I have a few other nitpicks with the movie, but overall, I really liked this film.

Just chiming in with my opinion,

Rex

When movie hell is full, re-makes shall walk the earth.

I don't find any MCU film to be "outlandish" and all seem "film-film" to me but I live comic books.

This movie hits all the right darker notes it's true and is VERY underrated. It feels like what the MCU has done with their Netflix series. Darker yet just as complex as the cinematic MCU.
