Met and then exceeded all expectations! Great film.

The Wolverine is exceptional in every way. It's an awesome action flick that totally surpasses its predecessors. It ultimately stays true to its comic-book roots while finding a unique and believable pivot point for an outstanding film all on its own. Take out all the action and you’d still have an entertaining character drama. That says a ton.

It's not just that this movie is more character driven yet still delivered thrilling action sequences, though that's true. Rather, it's that there's a whole story here. The Wolverine starts with the perfect pace and springboards in to aspects of the classic Miller/Claremont Marvel Comics mini-series in breath-taking ways. It's a multi-faceted tale with an emotional richness seldom associated with films in this genre.

Too much of 2013 has given us good reason to equate summer movies with empty, flash-bang exercises in computer-generated imagery and mindless action. (Yes, I’m looking right at Star Trek and Man of Steel when I say that) But the writers here are as interested in the subtext as they are in the high quality action. There's no denying that mutant powers are a tool but it’s the character depth that really drives this film. They use state-of-the-art special effects to deliver a live-action version of the comic books. What fans already know, however, is that vintage Marvel books are classics because of intelligent writing as much as comic book flare and fantasy. The movie delivers tremendous story and skillfully weaves together character, plot and action.

It’s just plain spectacular on any level that you judge it.

I just loved The Wolverine. I thought it was smart and the impressive cast really delivered! This movie works on so many levels and makes you draw on just about all of your emotions. It’s fun and smart enough to make you want to see more films just like it. I hope X-Men Days of Future Past is this good. (BTW- Stay until after the credits!) I really enjoyed this movie very much!

I also loved the film, i think it was more realistic (if you can call a comic movie that) and it had actual character development, as well as a good balance of action and story. Much better than Origins and more in the direction that a Wolverine movie should be. He's a loner and mad at the world, this movie actually spoke about his character. A solid 8 out of 10.

All good "comic book" films needed to be grounded for them to work and this one does it better than most is not ALL of them.

Twould seem the critics agree.

He is a Ronin without a master. He is the key to Immortality and everybody want's that power since he holds that. To me this is the most fascinating aspect.

This movie shows us that we are all ordinary. We are all boring. We are all spectacular. We are all shy. We are all bold. We are all heroes. We are all helpless. It just depends on the day.

In the review the critic says that the movie opens with the bombing on Hiroshima, but in actuality it is Nagasaki...

yes, I thought Origins tried to do nothing but flash with little story development and the action lacked the substance that was needed. This was a character driven story with some action scenes. I can see where some people might find the middle part slow, but Jackman was able to carry the film in those spots. I will be picking this one up on blu ray.

Definitely the best X-related film since X2 and my favorite film featuring comic book characters since The Avengers.

Yeah same..

I was surprised with how much I enjoyed it. My only qualm is I felt there was a bit too much Jean throughout the film. It was ok seeing her one time but then after that I felt she was a little overused. But overall a great film indeed.

He looks really really fierce though, like a proper don't give a frakk elf

Avengers is grander but this movie was stunning and thrilling.

So many people are saying they are surprised at how good it is. Were expectations really that low? You know the more people see The Wolverine the more cult status it will achieve now right?

I liked the scenes with Jean Grey. She represented his own insecurities, doubts, guilt, sadness, and a desire to not go on anymore. Her scenes were integral to the story, and it was moving when he finally came to a point where he was willing to let her go. Seeing her only one time wouldn't do justice to the idea.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

Amen to that.

In our time and age of hectic-paced CGI-saturated no-brainer mainstream movies, it was a bold move on behalf of the filmmakers to produce a superhero movie that really has some depth, substance and thought as well as the requisite action scenes.

The writing, acting, directing, photography are way above standards for a summer blockbuster.

On a side note, this flick does not stereotype its Japanese characters (or at least to a far lesser extent than what we're used to in Hollywood movies regarding ethnic portrayals), something rare enough to be praised.

This movie is proof you can combine smarts and action. I hope it smashes the box office as it deserves.

Iron Man 3 and now The Wolverine... Marvel rules the summer once again.

reply

iron man 3 is garbage , and the wolverine is 20th century fox not marvel

reply

The Wolverine has a Marvel production credit at the front of it, right after the 20th Century Fox logo.

It's not a Marvel Studios-produced film, no, but it's definitely a Marvel film. After all, Marvel & Disney are getting a cut of this.

And I just spun around three times, repeating "Iron Man 3 is not garbage," thus negating your post on the subject.

If IM3 is garbage then every studio would be hiring garbage men.

20th Century Fox will make good money on this film. It really had about $100 million budget after you factor out the tax incentive rebates to make it in Australia.

reply

Marvel can't lose. If X-Men cleans up, they get a piece of the pie. If Fox stops making them, they get the rights back and we get Wolverine in the Avengers. Win win.

reply

Marvel has enough on their plate. Let Fox keep doing these X-Men movies if they're going to do them this well. I never liked Spider-Man or Wolverine in the Avengers. Still don't.

Joss Whedon just said as much...

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/MarvelFreshman/news/?a=84707

When asked (yet again) about the possibility of a 'multi-studio crossover' film, Joss Whedon says, "That’s not the plan. It would be cool but I think right now I already have a ton of very talented actors in my movie playing a ton of characters, and I'm about to add a few more. So I'm not like, How can we get more licensed characters because I want to kill myself and make a nine-hour movie."

reply

I want Spider-Man to be three and done with Garfield. This Ultimate take sucks.

reply

I just saw the movie yesterday and it exceeded all my expectations.
I love how the movie played out. This was by far the best comic movie made this year. Not too many movies continue to have character growth from start to finish.

reply

I've seen it three times and it held up every time.

reply

I may not pay to see another movie until October... seriously.

reply

Bring on the haters because you know a film hit the mark when trolls are out in force.

reply

The Wolverine is a lot like Batman Begins. First two acts are all kinds of awesome, delving deep into the characters. Then, it becomes a fantastical blockbuster comic book movie in the third act. The best of both worlds and The Wolverine is by far the best of the series.

reply

No ones expectations were higher than mine and I just loved this movie. I have seen it twice with many more trips to the cinema to come.

reply

For the task of making a great stand alone film that could still be considered a sequel on some level that offered more then the first and was able to expand on the X-Men trilogy - it exceeds all expectations. The pace is better, the effects are better, the writing is superb, the additional characters were nicely patched in, Wolverine kicked backside, and overall this is one fine action film.
