So what was the flashback with the beating about?

I kind of dozed of watching this and don't remember if they ever told what Walters repeated flashback with him beating somebody up(and him being in uniform so it must have been recent) was about. Was it ever explained?

"Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down. Makes her home."

No, it wasn't. I guess the filmmaker thought it would be 'arty'.

Or you're just pretty thick in the head. It was pretty clear to me.

Wasn't that clear. If he beat him up, you'd thought he would have been a lot more hostile(or scared) towards Stormares character. But he was neither, and only was hostile towards the end. The first scene when he stops him in the car, is not exactly filled with tension.

Yeah the flashback definitely isn't about him beating up Rita's current boyfriend. Heck, when he's leaving the police station, you hear him telling the other agent a bit about the situation, and it obviously wasn't about him or he wouldn't be smiling about it.

It was for viewers who think they are not thick in the head to feel they were the ones who "got it".

The repeated flashbacks of Walter beating someone were 'insinuations' of something Walter did in the past (when he was dating Rita which she was witness to-thus we see her watching off to the side) that she shared with her current bad-guy boyfriend, Steve, who was goading Walter about it every chance he got - even at the first meeting when he stopped him in his pick-up on the road. Furthermore, it sheds light on the reason that Walter needs 'redemption', thus all the religiously slated music. That's my take...

We who hear not the music, think the dancer mad...
