I don't get this (spoilers)

I'm really unsure what the movie was about. Who killed the lady they find at the lake? Who was the cop punching? What about the missing little girl. I really did not enjoy this movie at all and i feel like the people who have praised it are just snobs--art for art's sake snobs. So if anyone can clear up why i watched this movie for eighty minutes or so, please let me know.

The guy did... he was punching ritas boyfriend as told by the obvious flashbacks... missing little girl was a metaphor for the mom losing her child.

This film is best understood if you are over 18 or so. And paying attention.

I'm well over 18, was paying attention, and as soon as the credits rolled I went "WAIT! Back up! It isn't over yet! NOTHING has come together yet!"

But it was too late, the movie was over and I will forever wonder what exactly they were trying to convey with this movie.

The best way to appreciate this movie is simply by not watching it.

Watch CSI. This is not for you.

Exactly - I get the distinct impression all the hate is coming from really dumb kids.

From what I gathered after watching, Steve(Rita's boyfriend) was the killer. The identity of the guy being beaten up holds no significance to the story. Rita witnessed the beating and that made her leave Walter (the cop). In the scene where Steve and Walter get into a fight Walter chooses not to into a beat the *beep* out of Steve before Rita's eyes (as he has done before but with some other, random guy) but rather chooses to have his own *beep* beaten out of. This way Rita will hate Steve just as she hated him when he was in Steve's position in the past, when he beat up a non specific person (could have been Rita's ex-ex-ex for all we know, that's irrelevant). So Rita turns now Steve to the police and that's that, I guess. See, murdering a stripper is Okay but when you beat up someone that's crossing the line. Also I guess she sees how Walter has changed his evil ways and decides she should be a good person too or something. Still murdering a stripper was OKAY to that point in her eyes. Yes, this movie makes no sense.
