worst. music. ever.

Ugh! It really detracted, rather than enhanced or advanced, the movie's theme & plot.

I am of the opposite opinion. I found it breathtaking almost every time it thundered into a scene. It felt like a Greek chorus or an ominous narrative. It doesn't surprise me that some people hated the music though. It's not in the middle of anything (no compromises). A very stylistically bold choice. I found this thread searching for the soundtrack by the way; my wife's been bugging me for weeks to get it for her.

I agree with you. i found the music strong and uncompromising and that it reflected the personal tensions of the characters and the do not give in personality of Walter.
i also was looking to see if a sound track existed.

reply

The music was fantastic.

reply

I loved the music!!

reply

no it was some of the best music I've heard during a movie. Looking for the soundtrack. Awesome.

reply

Bruce Peninsula, Canadian band did all but one song in this movie. Wow, I'd never heard of them before they're great.

Is you is, or is you ain't, my constituency?

reply

Are you for real??? The movie was OK, but the music was MAGNIFICENT. Maybe it didn't "advance the plot", but it certainly enhanced the atmosphere.

reply

It adds intensity. The script calls for subdued performances, but these characters have intense emotions bubbling under the surface. The music is reflective of what's going on in their heads.

reply

If one is looking to or needing to "add intensity" through the film score, than most likely you have a s-h-i-t-t-y movie. Besides that, the music was a distraction. It took away from the movie in that sense, notwithstanding a TERRIBLE script with almost ZERO drama 30-35 minutes in and one of the WORST set-ups in cinema history! So you're wrong, "scrapmetal". I know both film and music because I study both. Another poster on some other thread here called this film "pointless and a story not worthy of being told", which is a HELL of a condemnation to make. I agree with him 100% in this case, but I still gave it the benefit of the doubt. My grade would have been higher if it weren't for the music.
Yes, I gave it the benefit of the doubt, but the music itself literally forced my thumb very close to the OFF button of my DVD remote! Not just speaking for myself, but the other movie watchers I was with. We're a huge movie watching family and we enjoy and analyze films intently. Us wanting to abandon a movie literally 1/4 of the way through has only happened a precious few amount of time with the films we viewed.

If a writer needs music to reflect what's "going on in their heads", then he's not doing a good job as a writer. And if I was forced to do that, I could still do some scouting and find MUCH better music than the producer of this movie decided to go with by using this crappy no-name band, "Bruce Peninsula". What a JOKE of a band. My guess is that they knew these losers and wanted to through them a bone. But I digress on that for a moment. A filmmaker should never look at music to carry any film, unless it's more music oriented or a musical of some sort. If you have off-kilter characters, an off-kilter story and/or a subdued script, you wouldn't want to bring in terrible a-melodic and a-rhythmic off-kilter "music" to some how "fill a void" or "explain something". What a terrible explanation you provided, Scrapmetal7. Do you know anything about film making, you goober? A writer should ALWAYS be able to write emotions on a page without assistance and guidance from an outside source, such as effects or music. Especially if it's really negative or depressing or just TERRIBLE SOUNDING music from a no-name loser band like the ones they decided to use. You'll have a terrible balance and sought out compensation in areas where it's not intended or needed. A filmmaker should want the material to stand on it's as much as possible without all the bell and whistles, music, effects, etc. The audience will see it from a mile away, (and from the postings I've read on here, it appears I'm correct in my analysis). I'm lost at how this won awards. My guess is that the producers of this film knew some people. Cronyism blows.
This was obviously a loser art house film that only works and seeks to satisfy a scant audience with bad taste or one with a severe sensory input disorder if they can't hear just how terrible that music was.
One could substitute "subdued performances" (as you were to put it) with ANYTHING other than that GARBAGE! And yes, it was GARBAGE...It was depressing and made me want to punch the producers of this film in their faces for having the audacity of choosing such a no-name talentless band like Bruce Peninsula for the film score. I would ban that band from making music for a film they were making themselves or for even performing in public. I heard so many other types of tribal type, indie and folk rock bands that the they could have went with that are 1000 times better then these no talent HACKS!

You typed 600 words that boil down to "I hated the music." Congratulations. I loved the music, bought the sound track, and I think this was one of the best films of 2010.

It sounds like you have some personal issues with this band. If this isn't the case then I think you're a crazy person because you typed up 600 words about how "talentless" and "garbage" they are on the IMDB discussion board for a film featuring them.

Either way, good luck. You need it.

good music

reply

I'm with you! The music was terrible and annoying to say the least! It took away from the film which needed a good soundtrack to begin with!!!

How 'bout those distracting titles which was supposed to add something to this movie. I rate it about a 4.0, in spite of Peter Stormare who is a fine performer.

reply

Hated the music too. I found it too loud and it went on forever. All the songs were slightly different but annoying in the same way. I ended up muting half the movie.
People...what a bunch of Bastards.

reply

The music was full of itself, over the top and pretty bad, but I thought the idea of the way music was used in the movie was workable.
