Ironically, the music is terrible
I liked the movie overall, but the music in this movie is terrible and does not fit at all.
It is especially noticeable early on in the movie. Thought it was kind of ironic lol

I loved the music. My only complaint is the last piece heard during the tail credits goes on very long and very loudly and very repetitively, to the point I wanted it to just stop. But 95% of the music in the film had me waiting through the tail credits to find out who did it and if there were a soundtrack album available.
shareliked it too. They come from prison blues songs that Alan Lomax collected in the deep south around the 1930's or so. The songs in this movie, however, have been remade. I don't know by whom. They are repetitive because they were used while doing hard labor, keeping everyone in sync
shareIt's not the style I mind because I got what he was trying to do with it but he failed ultimately. It's frankly hard to listen to. Cacophonic and loud. And worse: not fitting the action or the mood at all.

I didn't like it. I recognized the Lomax recordings -- and because of that I was annoyed by the remakes. They sound like a white rock n roll guy (probably a Canadian, haha) trying to do a weak imitation and kind of missing the point of the songs. Just too loud and without the nuance or dignity of the originals.

I liked it too ... and your description is right on. Wouldn't have thought of the Alan Lomax connection .... but you're right.
Music is subjective. What floats my boat might sink another. No problem.

Loved the movie, but the title was right, those songs were murder.

Finally someone made sense of the header! Was bugging me and was about to post how the hell it was ironic.
Thank you good sir!

I suppose It's ironic in terms of your opinion. I loved the mixture of folk and and native themes.
As for the movie, I didn't hate it. The acting was great, and the music gave it more meat and mystery.
The Canadian band Bruce Peninsula is a fantastic discovery. Totally repeating on my iPod.
Cheers!
I disagree, I loved the music and I think for the most part it was fitting. Reminds me of the artist David Dondero, which I highly reccomend to anyone who liked this band.
shareThe music is fantastic and does fit the action, HIS actions. It's his inner explosion and search for GOD. Like someone said it's like a greek tragedy.

I agree. I thought the music was fitting to the mood. It was more like an intimate portrait than a film. Sound was amplified but sparse. Like a case study. Maybe it came off as a bit "film schoolish" but hey, why not try something different. 98% of movie production is drivel.
I thought it was an interesting film, and the music fit quite well...
so ironic lol
