i dont think it is insulting malick or alienating his audience. i think the quote is taking into account the fact that people who like malicks films are open to the more non linear, lyrical style malick uses, and that this film is even more of that. given the descriptions ive heard of the film, it is much more about the experience of these images and music washing over the viewer than anything approaching a narrative drive. when compared to a malick film with a story, structure, etc, one could accurately say that this film is much more experimental and less "hollywood" than something like tree of life. mind you, it is not saying that malick is "hollywood" or mainstream. it is saying that this film is more dreamlike and experimental than even someone like malick, which, without saying anything about quality, is probably true. no insult to anyone..
