The clothing they are wearing looks more like the Arabian nights or Aladdin than Chinese; is that the style of the Tang Dynasty or is it another part of the directors artictic license?
shareWell it's set in Gansu province, on the Silk Road, home to many Muslim Hui, so perhaps that's what the characters were meant to be; with, as you say, a fair bit of artistic license. It also features a white, English-speaking Persian trader, after all.
