shareWhat I thought was interesting was when he was witnessing her being beaten (before his "Trolls serve witches" line) he gets this look like "WTF" and is seemingly majorly offended, which was kinda funny to me.

I think when he overheard Sherrif Berringer's speach about taming horses, he realised that the black witches used and tamed him just like that. Also realising that Gretel is a white witch, as others have remarked, he chooses to help her, hoping she in return will help him escape the black witches and give him a better life.

She's a witch, he's a troll.....
Gretel is the daughter of a witch, a very powerful one at that. Trolls do serve witches. I guess in his eyes he wasn't breaking any rules by helping her. You have to admit, when Edward saves Gretel from the Sheriff and his henchmen, that was pretty badass. He squashed the Sheriff's head like a giant grape.
I have a question, though. If Gretel is a witch, then what does that make Hansel? A warlock?
Though, why trolls serve witches I want to know the backstory on. Were they enslaved? Is there some kind of magical spell binding them as servants?
They never say if her brother has any magic- I wish they would get a second movie and maybe answer that one!
Edward squishing the sheriff is my FAVORITE scene :)

pretty sure it's the "daughter of a witch = a witch" explanation, but the first time I watched the movie, before the audience finds out about their mother (I don't generally figure things out, my brain just doesn't work that way), I took it to mean he was keeping her alive because Muriel needed her alive, so following the chain of command, he was was serving Muriel's wishes by saving Gretal.
hope that makes sense, I still think it's a duel meaning if you want it to be :)
