Mandolin Slicers!!!!!

Am I the only one sick of seeing people on cooking competitions being sliced up by these things?!?!?!?!? I clench my fists for ages after I see it happen.

These things all come with carriers to hold the vegetable - but no one ever uses them! Like Missy said, you could end up with a career ending injury and yet you use your bare hand?

There can't be something in the rules that you can't use them in the competition without that or a kevlar glove?

I used a protective glove when I worked in kitchens and I would still get cuts. You can use a guard, but sometimes it is impractical.

But when you were using the glove were those cuts as bad as the one that Missy got?

I understand that getting cut is part of the job.

Just seems to me after all the Top Chefs, Masterchefs, Chopped and even Hell's Kitchens I've watched, that a using mandolin in a situation with a time limit is just an accident waiting to happen.

No, it probably saved me from several hospital visits. I'm surprised people aren't forced to use them. One minute they seem like the greatest thing in the world, then the next it hesitates. People get too comfortable around them and lose their concentration. There are a lot of talented people that hurt themselves like that.

with the mandolin.. a lot of it is a chef feels like he/she has more control of the object being sliced then the awkward hold that the "gaurd" gives.

i cut myself many times when i make homemade french fries and coleslaw. you have to focus like leaving food under a broiler
