This movie was a feast for the senses. Having not seen too many Italian horror classics (Mario Bava, Sergio Martino, and Dario Argento) what are some similar type films?

The films mentioned above are great. Also, I know you mentioned Bava but Black Sabbath and especially Blood and Black Lace....the lighting and colors were a heavy influence to Giallo films.
Also Black Belly of the Tarantula, Case of the Bloody Iris, All the Colors of the Dark and The Red Queen Kills Seven Times.

this film was very much like lynch's first film, "eraserhead," in the aspect that the subtext is far more important than any actual literal interpretation.
so if you haven't seen that one, i highly recommend that you do.
