First, let me say that I kind of enjoyed Amer. It's certainly not one of the best films of the decade, or even its respective year, but with its beautiful shots and evident appreciation for stylized cinema, it has a place in the world of art films.

As for it being just like every other giallo... that's pretty much a bs statement right there. I can see the inspiration, but when people on this board say 'if you like so-and-so (a giallo title) then you'll like this because it is like those films', I question whether those people have seen those movies. Both have plots, but gialli have very up front details, and they are very far from Amer. Even Suspiria, an admittedly low-key plot, has more to say than Amer (and is a better film).

Those saying that this is the worst of the worst, though correct about it maybe being a bit too pretentious (it is; I can't say it's not when it so clearly is, but I kind of ) are not taking into account everything. You can think this, but I find they have a smaller past viewing experience pool. But those who repeatedly reply to these folks with "OMG, go turn off your brain and watch a mainstream film" are almost as bad. It's also not helping people to see why perhaps they should give Amer a second shot. It's encouraging their viewpoint of the annoying uninformed not-really-underground indie-propaganda'd new film theorists that don't know anything about what they're talking about. So please, next time someone says they hate a film, don't tell them to watch Transformers, because you're only making them shy away even further...

That is all. Oh, and that the scene with the dark veiled lady in the beginning is creepy as hell!

Love this post. Mainly because I agree with it to the max. See my signature for proof! Both ends of the spectrum seem to be wrong, it's all about middle ground as you allude to.

I love horror movies, but for whatever reason can't get into the giallo's like i'd hoped, never could. Ergo this was a waste of time for me. Great visual style, but everything else was a big miss. But I can at least see why others would like it, it has artistic merit whether I liked what was happening or not. Some movies I honestly cannot say that about...

"You didn't like this movie? Go watch [insert completely opposite movie] instead"

Thank you thank you thank you. You put it all so well. I'm a fan of independent, foreign, and off the beaten path films. This was just way too out there for me. I know there are plenty of people who enjoyed it and that's cool. To be honest though I think people are trying way too hard when they say it was "the best film ever made/of the year." But whatever if you really feel that way than so be it.

Anyways just because you think this movie sucks doesn't make you an idiot. It doesn't mean you can't appreciate a great independent film and you should just go watch Paul Blart Mall Cop. I personally find it a really weird argument to be defending this film and say something along the lines of "it lacks plot development." Okay different strokes for different folks but don't get smug with someone who says they like a film with plot. I already know what some people are thinking. "It has plot blah blah blah" there for I will put it like this. No one is an idiot or incapable of abstract thought if they don't like watching a film with a plot flow like this one.

Part of finding really great films is weeding through movies like this. Sorry but it was a dud.

if the minimalist plot in the masterpiece that is Amer isn't good enough for you, then you should just go watch Fanny and Alexander

Certainly the most interesting "first film" since I saw Von Trier's Zentropa (Europa)- I often wonder how much passion people really have for cinema when they can't be exited by something new and different. This is a film to be first reacted to viscerally- I fear a lot of our more intellectual brethren simply have lost that ability. For true lovers of film- "if you don't like that...you don't like ice cream."

It is visually inspired by giallo (and visually above any giallo) for sure but most giallo is low IQ garbage with terrible scripts, bad acting, and amateurish looking violence. This film tells an atypical story using close-ups and quick cuts with very little dialogue. This has worlds more to say than Suspiria because every scene is saying something, the camera is the voice.
