ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER MADE

I saw this film in Sitges too. It is the strongest film I have seen since decade. It is just an AMAZING experience!!! Since the first image until the last music note you are totally hypnotised. You just feel the film in your skin. My body was shaken by shivers and at the end I couldn't speak anymore. A big blast in your head. It's just a daring and brave film... we are not used to see that anymore!

It's fine to make movies for you and your friends, but those used to be called HOME MOVIES... Now they're apparently called "indie" films.

I'm sorry but I disagree that this is anything like a home movie. Lots of the mumblecore and indie films could be criticised for this but this film is the complete opposite as it has amazing photography and soundtrack but is low on plot. I you had called the film pretentious or vacuous it could be excused as some people expect that in films (I don't). A better insult would be to call it a 90 minute music video or advert. Anyway, I still think this is a highly enjoyable film. Amazing to rank up that much tension and eeriness while having almost no plot development or characters. Some people say it's the film of the year.

reply

The problem is not that it is low on plot or dialogue, VALHALA RISING is exactly that and is a brilliant film.
Amer is just bad in every way. photography music..ugly boring people, creepy in every way.
Maybe things were better before the advent of the digital camera. Too many no-talents filming out there now.

You cannot even call it a music video which at least contains great images and music.
It's more like a photo album. There has to be be SOME justification for the endless stream of boring "aesthetic" imagery.

After all the hype over this movie I was incredibly underwhelmed.

It's a beautifully filmed homage to giallo and surrealism but its non-narrative, devoid of dialogue, experimental, esoteric nature detracted from the entire experience for me.

The first part was awesome and super creepy and had it continued in that vein with a bit of plot it could have been spectacular.

I saw this on Saturday night at the Grimm Up North festival here in the UK and I have to agree.
An incredibly beautiful and powerful film. I'd probably go so far as to say iut's the most "visually arousing" horror film i've ever seen. Extraordinary and a definite must have purchase when it gets a DVD release for me.

^ Nice review here, for those interested...

Are you on drugs, while the first story is good, the rest of the movie is a total mess, what is going on, no dialogue we do not know why she is there or what is going on. You can not have a film without any real dialogue.

reply

I am not going to debate the merits of this film, but the notion that you can not have a film without any real dialogue is ludicrous.

reply

Really..u think so? U R WRONG!

reply

Your unwillingness to write the words "you" and "are" properly is terribly sad.

It's a shame nobody was able to inform the the directors of this before they wasted their time making the non-films Hukkle, Baraka, and Last Year at Marienbad.

reply

No hyperbole for this movie, it was an interesting, at first at least, but overall pointless and flawed attempt. The visual style of the movie eventually kills the whole thing. Just because you glued the camera to the actor's faces while they are running doesn't mean you are doing something interesting, or even necessary for the movie. It just means you like to play fancy and do stuff for the sake of doing it.

reply

"You can not have a film without any real dialogue."

Uh... Ever heard of a film called '2001: A Space Odyssey'?

Your opinion is meaningless to me now.

reply

Doing it for the sake of doing it? How about you try and think, "gee, this filmmaker is doing this thing a lot, maybe I should think about WHY its shot like this and why it sounds like this."
There's a reason it was shot that way. To me, it adds to the awkwardness of being in public, and I felt as uncomfortable as the woman/girl. You could just FEEL how insecure she was just by the awkward camera closeups and editing, honestly, it could have been a silent film; this is the mark of brilliant filmmaking, and trust me, its not an easy accomplishment.

As for the awkward running stuff in the middle of the movie, I felt as if the filmmakers were just showing the girl loosing herself in the moment. Shes focused on the boy with the ball, and all we see is her, and the boy. Nothing of the background.

Shes in her adolescence, torn between childhood and adulthood. So, we first see her chasing after this boy with a ball, she probably wants to play. Then at the end shes there being stared down by a biker gang all of whom clearly want to have their way with her, and she knows it. Do you see the dichotomy?

I'm really sorry you didn't enjoy it, because it really is a great film.

The more recently released The Illusionist" has less dialogue than that and is a wonderful film.

A few points from the above criticism of there being no narrative or dialogue;

- The heavily stylised cinematography is a narrative device to illustrate the characters fragmented mind.

- Because the character is so heavily internalised the dialogue with the audience is again expressed by the cinematography.

One may not like a film, but films like this give the viewer the chance to write about them at length.
