First of all, the "bear" community is made up of all types. Hence the many terms used within the community: bears, cubs, otters, daddies, muscle bears, leather bears, chubs, chasers, admirers, etc. And yes, they were ALL represented here.
The common factor is body hair or at least facial hair (unless you're a chaser), and only most commonly - but not always - a larger frame. But being a bear is really less of a body image and more a lifestyle (rugged, outdoorsy) and sometimes just a frame of mind, a way of life or even a fashion style - being a more rugged dresser; denim, leather, lumberjack type - "bear drag," as it was called in the movie.
Secondly, the bowling thing was not all that random. Because of our stature, bowling is a common interest among bears, and in most cities we bears have our own leagues, just as most also have a softball league, darting tournaments and rodeos.
As for Roger ("the old guy"), if you pay attention, his conflict is mirrored in Tyler's conflict. Just like Tyler said, it's one thing to come out of the closet in the first place. But admitting you have a preference for those completely unlike you, those who are outside your "circle" is just like coming out of the closet a second time.
