Why doesnt Chinese flicks EVER have happy endings??!

They're rather DEPRESSING w/ all the wrong ppl dying. Whats up with these Asian films recently like Little Big Soldier, Battle of Wits, and Shinjuku Incident?! Has the recession hit China that bad that even their movies have gotten depressing? Chinese people never end up happily ever after in their films like Japanese & American films "yet" Chinese films r better...weird. Does anyone know of a good ancient Chinese flick such as this or an epic one "but" with an happily-ever-after ending...or neither lover gets killed at the end???????

If you nailed jesus christ to the cross and are 100% proud of it, put this in your signature.

Because in reality, most of Chinese histories have been tragedies.
Happy endings are nothing more than fairy tales, aimed to please little care bears with fantasies of ponies and unicorns.

Haha, so true...so true. "Aimed to please little care bears with fantasies of ponies and unicorns." Epic.

Why doesn't American flicks EVER have sad endings??!

Why doesn't American flicks EVER have sad endings??!

This is the dumbest rethorical question EVER. You need to see more American movies.

reply

Because they are trying to be real and lets face it in reality the happy endings are rare and far between ;)

Anyway i thought this had a happy ending, atleast i was happy that it ended. Its hard to say it but even as a hardcore kung-fu movie fan this movie was lacking in all aspects, and don't even let me start about the end fight scenes, that was down right ridiculous.

reply

well this is suppose to be part of the Wuxia genre, the fight scenes are over the top but that is natural for it's genre.

However the story yeah, should of ended when the mother died the third act was soooo unnecessary. Yuen Woo Ping isn't as good of a director he use to be.

This movie has a sad ending? No one dies at the end, only the bad guys, and he keeps living happily with his son.

I admit I felt rather depressed after watching it, but only because it was so goddamn awful. The slow-mo and CGI were overdone, the rythm of the movie was dreadful, and the protagonist was one of the less likable characters I've ever encountered in the genre, or any movie in general. I was cringing during that scene where he tries to hold the rice bowl and yells at his wife, and then falls into a catatonic state and loses his mind FOR NO REASON. Did he have a previous condition? They sure didn't tell us. Was it the poison that turned him insane? Again, it wasn't explained.

The actor wasn't much help either. Maybe with a better actor it wouldn't have sucked as much.

Anyway, the protagonist was a dense idiot.

Well this movie is about Beggar Su, the character is a beggar and an alcoholic. Considering who it's about, how are they supposed to give it a happy ending.

reply

Cause in the real world there isn't allways a happy ending. Which I do say your wrong about some of these movies. While yes they might die, but alot of them die for a better cause so that there kids and others could have a better life. I'll use Hero for an example. While he could of killed the king, he over time come to find out the uniting of all the kingdoms into one was truely better and that he told his story and knew that it was a better choice, even though this would mean he would die for this, but many others will live.
