George W. Bush

Really, I am no fan of former President George W. Bush.

But the comparison made in this film of him to Hitler and Stalin, which I think is what was done in the scene in which there are exactly three photos on the wall--one of Hitler, then one of Stalin, and then one of Bush, is pretty ridiculous.

Hitler started a war that resulted in the deaths of, at least, something like 50 million people, including probably about 13 million and possibly more who he outright murdered. Stalin was really into murdering his own people too, and estimates are all over the place but it's safe to say the number he outright murdered, alone, is in the millions, not to mention the people whose deaths in one way or another he's pretty much directly responsible for. These two are two of the very most, er, prolific torturers/murderers/death-causers in world history.

Let's assume, for the sake of argument only, that Bush started unjustifiable wars of conquest that have resulted in somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 deaths, very likely nearer to the lower end of that range, and that he has committed crimes against humanity by torturing alleged prisoners of war--I think it still would seem pretty offensive to compare him to Hitler and Stalin.

It isn't as if Hitler and Stalin are in a class by themselves either in terms of their cruelty/prolificness--there are at least a couple others at least arguably in that class like Mao. Where's Mao's photo?

And it definitely took me out of the film. I felt the need to pause it to write this. I was just like, really? I think comparisons like this kind of erode the horror that folks should really feel when they think of guys like Hitler and Stalin--especially Hitler.

If you notice properly, there were more photos including Saddam Husain, some Korean/Japanese dictator etc., so it had most of the leaders with the attitude of "greater than thou" and not really the number of kills factor but people who thought they belong to some higher race than the ordinary human beings. And with that attitude they felt human life is not that worth, they can be used for any kind of research, torture, kill etc., for them it does not matter how many they kill or hurt, its only a matter of resources at their disposal. Hitler killed that many because he could, if he was an ordinary person living in lets say USA, he probably would have killed few people and the law would have taken him out and he would have been branded a serial killer.

Agree entirely the gallery was of rulers devoid of humane concern for life, regardless of their murderous achievements. In this regard Bush is well placed. Still, GWB stood out as in a separate and rather ridiculous class apart. I think this is peculiar to the American tyrant. Stalin, Hitler and their ilk are possessed by a personal psychosis that captured a nation. In some manner the American equivalent is more impotent, destined only to embody the psychosis of the nation already existent. As such he is himself a weaker, more pathetic figure, not a driver of destiny, though no more moral for it.

Well, he DID start the wars.

He also had the backing of congress. Republicans AND democrats.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

i think you missed the end of the movie. none of those things happened. the events were in the mind of a character....who was sent off to a war where horrible things were done by his fellow soldiers (in the movie) and where his own legs were blown off. Wouldnt it make sense that he (in his mind) would have GWBs picture on the wall??

^Thumbs up to this response (and as an aside, I think the inclusion of Bush by the producers was just a little bit of an inside joke...).

Right. Well, I have to-- I have to go now, Duane, because I, I'm due back on the planet Earth.

Yep, where was Tony Blair's picture?

Bush gets all the backlash, but what about Blair and others who jumped right in along with him?

Hopefully, most people know to compare Bush to Hitler and Stalin is just insanely stupid.

Not that Bush is an Angel, but I truly believe he cared about minimizing civilian casualties as much as possible, whereas the other two piled up the civilian bodies by the millions on purpose.

Obama is the longest serving wartime president in the history of the US.

Interesting how things work out.

Really shocked how the media swept that under the rug. They're usually so honest with us.
